I've tried Champions Online like most of the people here.

If I were you I'd just save up for Guild Wars 2, which is a one time purchase if I'm not mistaken.

I've tried forsaken world, and it feels like the closest thing you can get to WoW without it being wow.
Personally, I like Dungeons and dragons online. As said before, it has a lot in common with its PnP counterpart. The ability to make whatever character you want, underpowered or not, is a big plus for me, and you don't miss too much that the P2P people get. In fact, unless they rub it in your face constantly, you would rarely ever notice. I also enjoy being able to play a halfling barbarian and not have to worry about my damage dice being smaller due to size (unless they finally fixed that).

OP, could you be more specific as to the genre you wish to play?

My favorite MMO to date is Fallen Earth, but it ain't free.
I got bored of D&D after about 2 months.
Champions Online is allegedly F2P now - I distinctly remember that the free weekend I played was pretty entertaining.
Runescape - never played it, but I hear its F2P

Perfect World International? What madness is this?
Oh God! It looks like a JRPG! Run away!

Lotro is good, you can actually get to 65 without paying a dollar, though it's a *****.

There's also League of Legends, you can have some good times and some bad times, depending on the level of douchebaggery is in that particular game

DDO is pretty decent experience.

Dungeon runners wasnt bad either if you wanted to see the illegitimate incestuous love child of Diablo and Warcraft.

Also when it comes out, it might be F2P but Planetside 2 is going to end up pretty awesome I do believe

NEStalgia is a decent game. Although there are some classes you can't access for free. And some cosmetic things. It won't tell you that you can't access certain areas or stuff like that like a lot of the bigger "free" to play games like D&D or Conan.

It will hopefully graduate into the realm of great game when the summer content hits and the skill tree system is in place.

Mind you the whole thing is an homage to old early 90s console RPGs. Like Dragon Warrior style. So if that isn't your cup of tea you probably won't like it.

Atlus has a free MMO called Neosteam. I don't play MMO's because I want to spend my time on many different games, whereas these usually require a great bit of attention I don't have, but it looked really cool.

-Champions Online
-Spiral Knights
-Guild Wars
-Runescape

All excellent choices. Take your pick, for I highly recommend them all.

Currently playing Forsaken World. Seems to do most things well, but I'm suspecting the dungeons you can only do at certain times will get annoying. Seem to be getting a little light on quests at lv 28, but could be missin' something.
Opinions on other MMOs:
Dungeons & Dragons Online: a lot of fun in the early levels, but when I got to the "raiding" part of the game, I found most of the raids I did weren't much fun to play and the gearing up was just grindy.
Global Agenda: Fun for what it is. After the quests (which is basically the tutorial) you team up in groups and achieve objectives. Not tried the PvP so don't know what it is like, but fun for what it is imo.
LoTRO: Was boring to start off with, then got more fun later on. Didn't really "click" with me, though, so kinda giving it a break.
Runes Of Magic: Was fun at first, but when I played the dungeons seemed to be massively unbalanced and there wasn't enough content to totally avoid grinding. May have changed since then.
Champions Online: Can't really get into this game. Not got that far, but it just didn't feel that much fun to play. Not helped by the fact I kept dying at some points ¬¬, which makes you weaker and more prone to dying.
Requiem: Bloodymare: Grind-o-matic. Quit when the only thing available to me was to grind mobs. Pass. Also had power-for-sale in the item shop, so I quit.

TF2's an MMO by definition, right?

GET EET.
It's an FPS.

OT: Age of Conan is F2P now, Champions Online is also F2P. And Fallen Earth will be F2P in august I think.
MMO:

Massively
Multiplayer
Online

TF2 is massive, it's multiplayer and it's online.
Its not "massively multiplayer" though is it? By your definition CoD and Halo are MMOs. Which they are not. MMOs need MUCH more people and persistent worlds.

Dungeon Fighter Online is hilariously fun if you play it with a few of your friends. It's like streets of rage combined with Diablo 2 = Aka: Epic.

Vindictus is pretty good as well. Lord of the Rings Online, Dungeons and Dragons Online, APB is fun too. Once again most of these games really shine if you've got somebody you know and who are willing to play as well.
