Chrono Trigger. A lot of people said the PlayStation version was bad, but I liked it a lot.
It wasn't bad just didn't add a whole lot, that's why I say play the DS version if you can't get the SNES one. Gotta go with Persona 3 and 4 also.

Does FF Tactics A2 on the DS count? Because for a while there I was HOOKED on that game =D

Actually, all the JRPGs I've played recently were on the DS...
Valkyrie Profile was quite good...

The Disgaea series and Persona 3 and 4 are pretty good.

The Disgaea series is pretty different from Normal JRPGs, the stories are usually pretty good, the characters vary from funny to akward, and there's ALOT of stuff to do after you completed the main game. It also helps that none of the games are connected except for a few cameos here and there.

Persona 3 & 4 is like a mix of normal JRPGs and Pokemon, except instead of pokemon you summon mythological beings from various beliefs and you also summon them by taking a gun like device (an evoker) and basically shoot your self with it (at least in the third game). The concept is pretty strange at first and it gets kind of awkward playing the "Dating Sim" parts of the game at first, but those are really good games. The stories are very good, the strange mix of hip-hop they use actually fits in both games and these both have some of the most awesome moments in any JRPG (Taking a nuke like insta-death attack in the face and just barely surving it, as well as getting to use the god of the world on the final boss).

I'd say go for Eternal Sonata, behind that cutesy exterior, is a very good story (especially as you get closr to end) fantastic music, and addictive, if a bit simple gameplay.

It'll also last you a fair bit, because it has two endings, and your second play through has a bunch of stuff that you can unlock, not to mention a bonus post game dungeon that I'm still playing through with my party at Level 86 roughly. It's a good 'un, I suggest you give it a try if you haven't already.
I'm afraid I'm going to have to disagree. While Eternal Sonata is an absolutely beautiful game with incredible music (as befits a game about Chopin) and has an interesting battle system, I found the story to be incredibly poorly paced. I still haven't managed to get myself to finish it simply because it takes so long to get anywhere.

This isn't a slight against "long" stories either. I'm fine with long stories, but they need to actually move. Eternal Sonata's story is so goddamn slow it drives me nuts and I end up quitting out of boredom to play an RPG which moves faster than a snail's pace.

Obviously we're going to disagree here, but I thought I'd offer my opinion on the game as well.
Seriously, do yourself a favour and finish it, the whole thing gains a different perspective when you do. Then when you play it again, (especially if you just did some research on Chopin) you'll notice ALOT of things, that you didn't get the first time around.
Agreed. The game is beautifully done.

Tales of Vesperia and Tales of Symphonia. Some of the story can be a little cheesy or cliche, but the gameplay more than makes up for it. Getting those 100+ hit combos is so satisfying.

I never got why people liked the 'Tales' series, I can't stand most of the games.

Same goes for the 'Saga', unless "Tales of Symphonia" is different...

While everybody is screaming ToS, they forget another great JRPG gem on the 'cube.
Baten Kaitos Eternal Wings and the lost Ocean.

It's a great game. Great story and probably the best combat i've ever seen once you really get into it. Fact that you have to think on the fly and not just reuse the same moves allover again really trains you to be better at the game.
If you're a completist though, this game will eat you up. The 100% is nigh impossible to get.

I played Baten Kaitos Origins and hated it. I got to disc 2, but I just couldn't stomach the battle system anymore...
To each his own. Personally I loved the game for it's combat system. But I can understand people not liking it.

I like the older final fantasies, kingdom hearts (well I think it's a jrpg), and a few others, but there are so many BAD jrpgs, and I really need a good one. I have no problem with the jrpg stereotypes (spiky haired brooding protagonists, etc.), but I'm just looking for a jrpg that has satisfying combat and a story that isn't badly written and acted on any playstation or gameboy. (No star ocean or golden suns, please)
Define old FFs are we talking pre FFXII or X or VII or VI or IVas those tend to be the big ones for FF divisions? Although ffrom comment I am banking on FFVII.

I was surprisingly addicted to Skies of Arcadia: Legends for the Gamecube. Other than Kingdom Hearts, it was the only JRPG I really gave a crap about.

anyone have an opinion on Grandia 1? I'm kind of curious
Gameplay, story, music, and graphics have aged very well.

The voice acting...has not.

Anyway, I recommend any of the first three Wild ARMs games.

I love the Valkyrie Profile series, which deals with gods, humans, and hefty issues. The Chrono series are also loads of fun. On the topic of Jrpgs that I do not like- I've played Eternal Sonata but I never really got into it (I'm told that the story gets good later on but I've been too lazy to keep at it). I also personally found the Star Ocean series, Tales of Symphonia, and FFXIII (beautiful though!) unoriginal and simply not fun. :(
