I've never been a massive sci-fi reader, but last year i read all four of the "Hyperion Omnibus" by Dan Simmons (was given the first and fourth and felt compelled to read the rest)

The reviews are always great for them, and i hear a movie is in the mix :)

Read the other books that come after Ender's Game.
That's what a friend recommended; Speaker of the Dead and Ender's Shadow, I think their called (?).
No, Ender's Shadow started the spin-off series following Bean. The main series is: Ender's Game -->Speaker For The Dead-->Xenocide--->Children of the Mind. The spin-offs are Ender's Shadow--->Shadow of the Hedgemon--->Shadow Puppets--->Shadow of the Giant.

Now that I think of it, Card's Homecoming series is pretty good too. First one is either "Memory of Earth" or "Call of Earth", can't remember.

The Halo novels are good to decent (except for The Flood, only read if you haven't played the game (Halo: Combat Evolved) or are a serious enough fan to wonder where the humans got all their stuff and what they did while the Chief was off being badass; not a bad book but just not worth reading unless you really want/need to).
Read three of them: The Fall of Reach, First Strike, and The Flood. I liked the First Strike, and Fall of Reach was great.
Well in that case I heartily recommend Ghosts of Onyx, Contact Harvest, and The Cole Protocol.

Also Dan Abnett is a good writer. He's wrote quite a few Warhammer 40k books (I've read the Eisenhorn trilogy and am looking to read the Gaunt's Ghosts series).

Roger Zelazny's Amber series is the best sci-fi I have ever read. It is a mix of fantasy/sci-fi and his writing is incredible. A must read.
Oh yeah, I forgot Amber, that was pretty good. My only complaint was switching the protagonist from Corwin to Merlin halfway through, just when I was starting to like Corwin, but that's relatively minor.

If you enjoyed "Ender's Game," you should read "Ender's Shadow" as well. The whole book is told concurrently with the former, but from Peanut's PoV.

*Completely ignore this entire post. ninja'd and wrong info.

Since no-one else is going to recommend it, ever, The King in Yellow by Robert Chambers. It's a collection of short stories in somewhat of a sci-fi vein written before the turn of the century. To give an idea of what ways it's gloriously weird/messed up, it was inspiration for Lovecraft. As a note: the first story takes place in the glorious future of 1921 or so, the nation has just installed public suicide booths, and a guy thinks he can take over the world by royal lineage and the power of a book/play.

Also, try Piers Anthony, the Witchworld series by Andre Norton, and Friday and The Cat Who Walks Through Walls by R. A. Heinlein. This is not to mention C. J. Cherryh.

Most of Larry Niven's "Known Space" books are good, especially the short story collections. The Ringworld books are hit or miss, but they're worth a try (I liked them...eventually).

'Snare' by Katherine Kerr. It's about one-third fantasy, two-thirds sci-fi. Very interesting. It covers the usual aspects such as religion, magic and technology, but the way she interprets and changes them is very intriguing.

Read one of Gaunt's Ghosts, "His Last Command". I liked it.

The Time Machine and The Invisible Man by H.G. Wells are great novels.

Actually, anything by H.G. Wells is an excellent Sci Fi book.
Ha, agreed!

The Stars My Destination by Alfred Bester. Good book to get you into science fiction as it's both one the best in the genre and a lot of fun to read.

Last and First Men by Olaf Stapledon. Millions of years of future history. Lots of imagination.

Gradisil by Adam Roberts. This guy is a great writer.

Accelerando by Charles Stross. Good book by the antipope of the church of the singularity.

I'm looking for a good book to read, and wondered if you guys (and gals) could offer some recommendations? I'm looking for something science fiction-y; from 'techno thriller' to 'space opera', anything related to science fiction.

A few books I have already picked out: 1984, Brave New World (first two aren't very science, more fiction), Foundation (and the prequel), and Starship Troopers.

I've already read: Ender's Game (amazing read!), Dune, Hitchhiker's Guide, and War of the Worlds.

(I quickly scanned a search of this, didn't see anything).
.....Necromancer?
You mean -Neuromancer- right? Although, that could be considered more Cyberpunk, then again, it is set in the future somewhat and has lotsa sci-fiey stuff.

Hmm, Ian M. Banks, awesome Scottish author, his Culture novels are the best, I'd recommend Consider Phlebas and The Player of Games to start off with.

Yeah Ender's Game, Speaker For The Dead, Xenocide, Children of The Mind, and Ender In Exile.

Just finished Speaker For The Dead myself.

Anything by Ian Banks and you're sorted. His Culture series in particular is excellent.

The Honour Harrington series is ok to start off with, but the characters are pretty shallow and the story not much better. Nice action in it, but that's easily the best bit and as I understand it the later books drop the action in favour of politicking n stuff. Once you realise that most of the combat is based heavily on Napoleonic-era naval warfare it looses its charm a little.

A must read for any Sci-Fi fan, is Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern series. They are some of the most amazing books I have ever read. I think that these books are what gave Christopher Paolini some of his ideas for Eragon and the rest of theInheritance series.
Lets be honest here, they're mostly more fantasy than sci-fi - though yeah, they were a good read :D
No, Anne McCaffrey's Pern is FIRMLY rooted in SciFi. Genetics, my friend, genetics.
