Considering this is the largest update ever, a lot of other users are saying there mods are working fine, and your entire argument seems to be that "this has never happened before", I'm inclined to think that it's an accident. It also just doesn't add up. Valve are one of the most mod-friendly developers, and this move would have no purpose except to generate bad will. So, I call coincidence.

Mine are working. Must be your TF2, mate. Not just that, but updates to games very frequently break mods until the modder updates them to work with the new update.

Could it be that now it is free to play Valve need people to keep purchasing custom skins, weapons, hats etc. from their store, and people aren't going to do that if they can mod them for free, so Valve deliberately break all the mods and only reinstall the ones that won't compete with their microtransactions. I don't play TF2, but knowing dev. companies Valve still need to turn a profit with this, and they are not going to encourage activity that cuts into their profit.

If what you say is true, perhaps it was done to prevent bullshit like this:

'Are you fed up with your server full of people that don't know one end of the direct miss from the other?
People that feel the need to just keep coming back after you permaban them?
Or just people that haven't contributed some of their hard earned cash to your favourite war-themed hat simulator?
Then you know what you need? This plugin (and SteamTools).'

It's just a description of a plugin that bans players who didn't buy TF2.
