Now before you jump to conclusions im not talking about the Hary Poter book/movies im talking about the Hary Poter universe. Case, you remember that battle bitwing Tamblidor and Voldemor at the end of the fifth movie? Yea that was badass and i was wandering why arent the games like that? Well becase Hary is only a student thats why. So why not an MMO! The players get to chose between The Order of Phoenix and the Death eaters (90% of the players would be Death eaters for sure ;) ) and develop spells from the book only more visually impressive that in movies. And the universe is not that bad if you think about it.
So what you think?

It could work if it was done well.

Why not? Players could choose between various fictional races from the universe.

Are you avoiding copyright infringement, Mr. Gandalfur?

I think English isn't his native language.

Anyway, it would be hard to make a Harry Potter MMO outside of a school setting. It would pretty much turn into The Secret World.

There could be like a sub-plot involving the secret of magic getting out to the Muggle world, and you can go anywhere

You mean this? [http://dbmmo.com/]

OT: I think a Harry Potter MMO would work quite well, if allowed its own plot and seeking to differentiate itself from the books/movies in the most applicable way possible.

Like the Dragonball MMO that actually exists? It's not in the English language yet but of course you can get addons that translate most of it.

The factions or whatever could be the schools, Hogwarts, Durmstrang, and the French one I don't feel like trying to spell. I'm sure there are other schools out there as well. Each school could be the faction's home city essentially, once you finish enough quests there you "graduate" and can go out into the world.

Though it would be easiest to just make the four houses the factions and just have Hogwarts be the central quest hub.

maybe as long as you don,t end up with 9000+ "chosen ones"

Isn't that exactly what Pottermore is supposed to be?

If it ever gets put up?
from what I heard Potter more is a site that is supposed to host HP fanfics (AKA 1000+ stories of "special wand lessons" between Harry and Draco)

Depends on whether they focused on the setting or the plot of Harry Potter, the setting I think could be expanded to fit a common MMO but the plot was all completely hinged on guess who? Harry potter. I personally think the reason Harry Potter did so well was because of the setting was a really cool wizardy world where magic was everywhere and being used as a cheap readily accessible alternate to technology and you could just go crazy.
I think a lot of MMOs could stand to move a bit away from the combat setting and could use things like the miscelaneous spells and enchantments used by the early harry potter movies (Moving stair cases, invisibility cloaks, flying brooms sticks, balls that help you remember things, candy that's made to be played with, pictures that are alive, spells to provide minor convience, that sort of thing.
The second movie/book introduced a whole 'nother set of artifact type things as well as some mythical creatures like the pheonix and basilisk which was cool, third developed the social structure of the wizarding world and how it basically manages to function (the prison, the ministry of magic, where the fuck ups wind up) the fourth showed that it was a much bigger world that spanned really everywhere with the other schools, the fifth and sixth were both just there to wrap up the plot so those wouldn't be as useful.
Classes could be based on the different classes of magic, transfiguration, charms, potions, dark arts/defence against, beastiology.
Quests would be tricky and require some innovation but you could do things like capture the flag for pvp (Done to death but I think it would be interesting if it was more like real life capture the flag where it was all about dodging away and avoiding opponents on their side and catching them on your side using things like camouflage, spells to invert peoples controls, potions to increase speed/luck/performance, enchanted animals to distract enemies and transforming oneself)
where as PVE could be like fighting dark wizards or series of small one shot adventurers.

Who the hell is Hary Poter? You think there should be a cheap knock off MMO of the Harry Potter books? Of course not! And who the hell is Tamblidor and Voldemor? Oh, you didn't read the English versions of the books, did you? That would make sense.

Seriously, I don't think there should be an MMO per se, but I think it would be pretty sweet to have a game where you can customize your own student, get sorted and play a game as your own character. That could be fun if it was done right.

...There's no doubt this is bad spelling, but... some of that is almost unrecognizable...

Ah, birthdate is in '96. Thank the lawd for education.

OT: Yeah, Pottermore probably has it handled, although it's more of a social network. A straight MMO would probably fade into the puddle of all the others.

I want this to be like DC Universe Online.

Why?

Because it wouldn't make sense to me otherwise. Every person can learn any spell in the books anyways.

EDIT: I was also able to play that DBZ MMO. I'd... not. It's incredibly hard to manage using, and the install ain't worth it.

Well, it has an easy way for a leveling up system ("years" in Hogwarts), an economy, at least two factions, and a wide enough appeal. Now, the question becomes can it be done well.
