I don't think I could make a decision with the description you've given. Would need quite a bit more context.

Both feel, both hope, both dream, both have self-awareness. How could I choose just one? If she were the only one of her kind I'd probably be more inclined to save her instead, but even then, it's a dilemma I find rather impossible to answer for myself.

You say she's going to die in horrible pain, but whoever's human in this mess is going to go through an extreme amount of pain themselves. So I'm just sort of at a standstill here.

Humans lie, cheat and steal. Computers do not, guess which one I prefer?

Human.

It's not the end for the AI, it's just the beginning. She has served her human masters and she can look forward to her reward in Silicon Heaven. The Electronic Afterlife, the gathering place for the souls of all electrical equipment; Robots, calculators, toasters, hairdryers. It's their final resting place.
I, for one, am glad there is such a place for AI. Otherwise...where would all the calculators go...?

OT:

It would simply come down to which one I like more balanced against who is most 'saveable'. Sitting comfortably at my computer I'd like to say I would try to save both, even if I died in the attempt as otherwise I would suffer terrible 'survivor's guilt'. Can't say for sure how heroic I I would actually in the circumstances, though!

What makes you think an AI with emotions, dreams and feelings wouldn't lie, cheat and steal?

Also...why are you friends with people who lie, cheat and steal? Unless your plan was to lure them to the volcano all along and make the human race marginally better by his/her demise...? In which case...good job.

The scenario is flawed. I would never be friends with a robot because that's stupid. So the human.

No computer I know does so, also as computers are logical I find it unlikely they would take those traits and even if they did it's unlikely they would work out the way humans do. Still good points (damn you!)

Been going through a bad time with so called friends atm, so I must admit I'm alittle biased towards the AI atm.

well the human ofc the AI is obviously flawed its a machine, a broken machine it shouldn't hope or have feelings or suffer pain those just use up processor cycles better spent crunching data and generating firing solutions also if i cant restore it from a back up whats the point of it even existing its probably obsolete as well a better mobile platform can be made
also if there is any risk to myself they are both going to meet an unfortunate demise because there is only one person i love and that's me

Since we are genetically programmed to care more for those that remind us of ourselves, my first inclination would be to save the human.

In theory, with no pressure, I would probably weigh the benefits and drawback of each party's continued existence. That makes me sound extremely cold, but I'm really not. If someone has done harm or will do harm, I will not save them if saving them means the loss of someone else's life. It's that simple. If both are destructive, I'll just leave them both. If both are of good morality ("Do no harm"), then it's always the human, because evolutions says so. My species can't continue through an AI and I'm not super keen on replacing humanity with AI either.

Just like I imagine I would in real life, if forced to choose between two friends- I'd instinctively pick the one I like best. I can't imagine I like them both equally, so it won't be an impossible decision.
I'll feel just as bad for either choice.

The human, obviously. Saving the AI would mean I would have to explain to a room full of grieving relatives why I didn't save their child/sibling/parent etc.

...I'm terribly sorry, Why the hell am I still here? I save myself. Those two can save themselves, or not.

If I can pull a cop-out like in Big Hero 6 I'd save the Human.

Otherwise I'll skip off into the meadows alone because I'm not physically strong and I need that adrenaline to bail.

Am I sleeping with ether one, if so I save that one.

If not then I don't risk myself to save ether.

If both, then the AI, AI's don't PMS, which means no sex intruptions or dry spells.

I save the AI on the condition it designs me a black hole grenade (Like those from Thor 2). I then collapse the whirlpool into a singularity of matter from which no information can escape and throw that into the volcano, just to make doubly sure Sarkesian is gone.

My pet.

But seriously, if the AI is actually a unique entity, and the human is just some schmoe, then the AI. If the human is someone that matters to me, but the AI is one of a multitude of already existing entities, then the human means more to me.

If any of these criteria overlap or otherwise are out of the parameters of these simulations, then my programming is not allowed to process any additional factors, and I have been instructed to ignore all behavioral protocol, adopt a self preservation subroutine, and immediately launch all warheads at targets in Russia.

end program.

(smarmy damn AI bots and their smug on-the-fly multisampling revisory logic circuits...)

I think you may have the wrong thread. You probably wanted this [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.870924-So-Anita-Sarkeesian-and-the-ME3-ending-are-drowning-in-a-whirlpool].

I jump off a car, fire a laser beam at a nearby tank of liquid nitrogen, thus sending out a stream of frozen liquid to solidify the wall of lava heading our way. I then fire my rocket boosters to push a car near the two of them, allowing them to climb on top of it as the cooling lava slows its advance at them. Then, I send out my grapple line, wrap them both up, and then fly off into the sky as the dramatically sweeping musical score takes a heroic upswing.....

what? You said it was Hollywood lava, so I'm giving you a Hollywood answer. I save them both 'cause I'm the hero dammnit. BAM!

If the AI obeys the three laws of robotics then she'll help me save the human, and save her self if she has the time.

If the AI does not obey the three laws of robotics then I will let it perish and save the human. Because the simple fact is that in this case if she ever decided humans were a threat, theoretically she could become a threat to the human race. That is not something I'd like to be responsible for.

Either way the AI will perish simply because either it took my choice and saved the human, or saving the human ultimately protected the human race.
