What utter gall they must have to insinuate for even a moment that their DRM was for anything but anti-piracy. Really, declaring that their Always-Online DRM was an anti-piracy measure, which fucked up, is FAR more gratifying to their audience then literally any reason they've put forward so far. It's an understandable failure, and it wouldn't shame them as much for them to just admit this. Their greatest hope of damage control would be to throw their hands in the air and prove that they know what they did wrong. A calm show of good faith, to add sympathy to the angry mob.
Yet, instead, Lucy would have the legendary nerve to claim that it is actually a key implementation to the game. The fact that this would mean that they had put so little thought into the actual game and reception is baffling. That they would declare that they had pushed multiplayer into a traditionally single-player franchise and removed the single-player because they THOUGHT it would work well, that they would scoff and say that this multiplayer could only function through such an unpleasant brand of DRM, to suggest that they were so horrifically lazy as to leave such an "integral" part of their game undeveloped and broken... Instead of admitting that they fucked up, they'd rather have us believe that they're retarded! Hoping that it will have a better appearance. Trying to save face of a game that has taken the EA buckshot to the mouth.
I genuinely want to believe that is the case. I truly, truly hope that Maxis has not fell victim to some mind-disabling condition; that they simply took a gamble and lost. But it seems that for this pleasant reality to exist, I have to consider the ones it benefits liars. Every single response of theirs has only sunk them deeper in controversy. They seem to have no idea that saying "We're sorry that our latest innovation had a bad start" is not apologizing. Every single time, they try to polish off the dents in their armor. Hoping that they can still shove a man on stage to flash a cheesy smile while saying "Splash into the SimCity Servers!"; to maintain some air of a golden franchise for their advertizing campaigns. It's the worst customer service/PR/common sense you could expect from them.
And it's cartoonishly karmic that EA would be anywhere near this debacle. The legendary un-thinkers, who are gaining a reputation for breaking anything they reach. Who trudge through the industry with an iron resolve to block out the little voices that tell them of their faults. Who will undoubtedly move from this controversy with absolutely nothing learned, who will undoubtedly be under that brown spotlight again when they pass another miserable failure, who will undoubtedly think it utterly wise to insult anybody that brings the latest common criticism to their desks. At such a point where this is what EA is known for, one would expect them to take a long while to seriously rethink their PR firm. Instead they fuck up SimCity. Another fine joke from the comedians at EA.
