A knock at the door

You are home alone and its sometime after midnight, lets say 2am and you are still up for whatever reason. You are about to get into bed and get some sleep when there is a knock at your door. Whoever is knocking is relentless, thumping on the door endlessly in a consistent pattern. From the knocks they sound like a strong person. They make no attempts to communicate with you other than the knocking. What do you do?

Personally I would grab my trusty knife and call the police, I'm not taking any chances and if its someone who needs help then surely the police can be of more help than I can.

Try to ID who it is with a weapon close at hand while pretending no one's home or I just can't hear him. If they look hostile, I'm getting the 5-0 on the line. If they try to force their way in... Hell has vacancies and I can help fill them.

If they're not hostile, I'm still getting 5-0 on the line. There's instances where one dude will knock, wait for you to open, and then his crew runs up in the house on some home invasion.

Shine the light in their eyes and deck 'em if they look hostile.
Keep them pinned until the cops show, then back to bed.

Then when they enter I slowly turn around stroking my cat and I say "Mr Bond. We've been expecting you"

I am an extremely curious person so I'd probably open the door to see who it is...

However I am also an extremly anti social person so I wouldn't want to talk to the whomever it is...

This happened to me once.
When we lived on a massive hill in the middle of nowhere, as well.
I was freaked out, but I went and had a look through the window (we had a window that let you see the front door) and it turned out just to be my mum's best friend's daughter who'd had a fight with her mum in the middle of the night and took a taxi to our house.

I dunno what I'd do if it happened here, probably pretend not to be in, or try and see who it is. I don't really know anyone round here though so I'd probably call the police if they kept at it.

Throw water at them from my bedroom window then tell them to piss off and come back at a reasonable hour.

No point phoning the police round here, they never turn up.

I would probably call out to see who it was before I opened it. If I did open it, I would open it with the chain attached. I actually always open my door with the chain...can't be too careful.

But seriously? Look outside and see who it is, and if its someone I don't know, grab a gun, and the phone....and hope they go away soon. They bust through, it turns into a home invasion and I have every right to put a 12 gauge to their temple. Shoot first, call the cops later, though they need to make the first move.

Anyway, I open the door to see who it is. Chances are they haven't bothered coming to my house for any reason unless they know me. (It's up some stairs) And if it does turn out to be an assailant, I hope I can kick them backwards quicker than they can hit me.
