*look out the big window near my door to try and ID them. If I can, open the door and ask what they need and why they need it right now. One does not knock on a man's door at 2 AM if they don't need something urgently. If I can't, crank open the window and yell at them to come back in the morning, then go to bed.

All I would do is check the CCTV camera to see who it was and ask them what they wanted through the intercom, then I would just ignore them if it wasn't someone or something important. They are not getting through the door anytime soon with anything less than specialized hydraulic door breaching equipment. If they become to much of a nuisance I would call the police.

I agree with OP. I answer the door with a knife sometimes even when I'm expecting someone. In this case I would tell them to identify themselves before threatening calling the police.

This can happen a lot in my house so i'd probably call out and ask who it was or i'd be able to see who it was through the door anyway. Our front door has a large window you see but we also have a porch.

Endless constant pattern...no attempts to communicate...clearly this can only mean one thing, ZOMBIES!
I barricade my door and shout through it, "You'll never eat me alive you undead sons of bitches!"

If the unlikely scenario of the person at the door not being a zombie occurs, they'll probably just get weirded out and leave.

If it's the front door I can sneak down the stair and peak down to see who is at the door (there window and I get a clear view well maybe not in the night). If it's the back door then I get ready to dial 999.
Even if the person is starting to try to break, then good luck getting in since while the front door is glass, but my parent got a landing for put the shoes which is also black by a wooden door with a lock on it.
The back door is the kichen which agains has another wooden door with a lock too.

I always have a knife at my side, so I'd do my usual peep-hole view then open the door with my hand ready to draw.

What I did last time something like this happened, grab one of my swrods/batons and yell in a unsteadily elevating psychotic sounding tone "I'm GOING TO ENJOY THIS!" and start heavily stagger stepping to the door... If the person is a friend of mine, they shout their identity, if they're not my friend they have a chance to run.

In the middle of the night, it's either a friend or a foe, there are very few jehova's witnesses, or door to door salesmen stupid enough to bother me at night.

Fact is, most people who are just there to try a B&E job, don't like large, angry, armed people very much, and tend to avoid them, there are plenty of defenseless elderly people around, and they all have more valuable stuff than me... If it's an assasin sent to kill me, a confrontation is inevitable, in that case, I will have no choice other than disposing of the assailant(of dying in the attempt) and then fleeing the country to hide somewhere under an assumed Identity to stay alive anyway.

Look through the peep hole, obviously. If I'd recognize the person I'd let him/her in - if not, probably freak out, call the cops and then wake my roomies for protective cuddles.

Caption: have courage. Thank you escapist, thank you.

I would come quietly to the door and look who it is through the 'hole' (i forgot how it's called in English..) or i would just open it and find out what he wants, it could be important. If by some chance it is a robber then he must be stupid or very brave to make such a ruckus in front f so many neighbours.

I open the door (with the chain on now) and see who it is... This happened to me so many times: some people just get so drunk they can't find their own house, and for some reason they always bang on my door. Some even tried to muscle in, convinced that I was their house mates, until I firmly showed them out. It never got too bad, since most people here are "nice" drunks.

Captcha: knock off - are these usually related to the topic, or are they random?

After saying "Who is it?" and them not saying anything, I'll head over to the door, open it up, and likely just a I've expected, it'll be a big fat hermaphrodite with a flock-of-seagulls hair cut and only one nostril.

Seriously?

I wonder how this even happens. In my experience, if someone is too drunk to find their own house or flat, they generally pass out on the pavement before they can get near enough to a door.
This is a country where drinking in excess in seen as a good thing (although slightly less now). People are used to it, so they get smashed and get someone nice enough (usually the bouncers) to call them a taxi to get home. Problem is that they're too drunk to find their home and all the houses look alike, so they try them all.

A guy opens his door and gets shot, and you think that of me? No, I am the one who knocks!

Serious answer. Acquire heavy thing. Look though peephole. Open door and greet/use heavy thing.

Firstly, wander why, if they are trying to break into my house, they havent smashed in the front windows that are like, 3 feet from the front door.

After that thought, head down to the basement of my house, grab my 870, load it with bird shot, and wait for them to make the next move. Idealy by the stairs, should they decide to break in through the window, than run up the stairs, hoping to draw them up the stairs, so I can than get them into thwe deadly choke point that is my second story stairwell. Now, the shotgun wouldnt have a shell in the chamber yet, so I can get the ever reconizable shotgun racking. Once the intruder hears that, Im betting if he has any braincells, he will than decide to leave. If not, well... I live in a state with the castle docterine and the "stand your ground" clause, and live in a city where every building with live in residence has atleast several firearms of assorted types.

However is there, they wont be missed to badly...
