A long real life story

This is my second Thread.

Once I had a classmate, he was a lonely kid. He and I were in the same class. He did not have friends in class, neither did he talk much. He did however, play the computer for most of his life. It would make one think, why would a person be like that. My class was a lively and active class. We were a friendly class, the type who everyone could make friends with in a matter of seconds. But why, when everyone else in the class opened up and befriended everyone else, and yet he remained to give a cold shoulder towards the class, why?

The reason was discovered by me, Today, Friday 13 March. As only today I tried to post a Thread. I have to say I was not very good at it. I had never bothered to use the forums normally, unfortunately for me, this site "The escapist", had drawn me into Forums, the reason? It is because I had been intrigued by the numerous interesting posts at the side, while I was watching "Zero Punctuation".

But that aside, as i created an account, to reply to the Threads advertised by the "Whats New" section. After i finally made a few reply's, i became aware of a button. Little did I know that it was the start of my demise. The button was "New Topic". I was curious of what I could post and the excitement of posting my First Thread. I decided to post a thread on the gaming console. It was an utter failure, as the Thread was brutally thrashed about by "frequent forum members". "This is a poor concept for a thread", "it's been done to death", "it's badly executed" and "please use proper grammar and spelling". These were some of the common remarks that were made towards my Thread.

Honestly, I did feel bad about this. I did however did feel offended when posts like "Report and move on" came up. I felt very angry when i read them. After all I did say it was my first time writing a Thread, the least they could use less hateful words. I then remembered that, there were many "first timers" like me, and if they were to be nice to all of them, it would take a lot of patience. To add to the problem, there will be people who are just detestable, and to face them frequently in a forum, it would transform people like my friend into a heartless person and would not trust people easily from then on.

In summary, what I meant to say, is that being in a forum is like being in a MMORPG. Some would like to help and others would just want to annoy you, some due to their frequent exposure to bad new players who beg, they will conveniently add you to their hate list without a care. I, Ejhio, would like for forum members, to please be nicer to new forum members, I am 17 and I had totally ignored the forums until now, so please, some of us are just really ignorant.

To those who read my first Thread, i apologize for the bad topic and the grammatical errors are due to the excitement in my head for posting my first Thread.

Edit: Another proof of nice people around =D. Just read the comments.

IGNORANCE IS NO EXCUSE.
BURN THE HEREATIC, KILL THE MU... wait, this is not Warhammer 40.000
...
Uhm, Hi and welcome.

Yes, sometimes people can be too hard on us newcommers. Sometimes we deserve it, sometimes we do not.

heh, that is soo true, i dont like the people who do that to forums, they really shouldnt want to destroy peoples hopes and dreams like that, especially if they are new members, also congratulations on finding the new topic button, it took me like 30 minutes to try and find that little devil. And also, what ever happened to that kid. And for some constuvtive critism, not to be a douche, but how is this really gonna be open for convo? It seems some people are just gonna be over and over the same responce...

I know what you mean, I had a similar experience when I started out. Because of it I don't even make new threads anymore, but I can't come up with good ideas for them very often, so it's probably better for me that way.

I'm not sure how relevant the idea of making new threads is to making friends. I get what you're trying to say, but it sounds a little..... forced. I've been on here awhile and never been able to start a thread that got more than 20 replies, so.... keep trying.

At least your name isn't FishFoodCarl.

Its okay, when I see topics like that I just ignore the pre-posters if I feel I havent replyed to such a topic many a time in the past, I'll do it.

This whole 'done to death, been there, yawn' fest is a little patronizing to us who didn't have the advantage of being born a few years earlier and are a little new to the forum thing, and I don't really encourage it. Help a new soul out if he genuinelly isn't a troll and/or Spammer and direct him or her to the help and search areas of the site.

If you have a revolutionary idea, go ahead and post a new topic, otherwise It's not worth all the ridicule from your supposed 'mature' elders. It gives me a headache sometimes...

Hopefully the newer threads you create will not only be better (due to your experience), but also gain fewer frequent-posters with ill regard for new members. While we can understand they're doing their jobs, and their frustrations, we can also only hope to accommodate them better, so they won't be as rash.

It can be tough on new members when creating threads but I try not to discriminate against someone just because they have been a member for less time than me. Although I have to admit some of the new members have been annoying but I understand that not every newbie is an annoyance.

Don't let those that say "Done before", "Report and Move on" and "learn to use grammar" get you down. Ignore them and pay attention to the good parts of the website. Have fun here, don't let the angry people get you down.

It does help to wait a bit before making your first post, maybe 2-3 weeks. The reason for this is so that you can see what threads work and what threads don't. Once you know this, you should have no problems with making a thread. It's all about spending some time to learn the forum and then you'll have a ball, trust me.

It is a problem that some people respond to your thread the way they did though, some have even made a habbit out of telling people their threads are not working, something that is starting to annoy me.

Anyway, ignore these guys and pay attention to the Escapist standards.

Yeah, I am inflicted with the '3 Page Curse'. None of my threads ever die below 3 pages, but not above that either. As an experiment, I made a controversial topic about piracy being wrong and unjustifiable, and the flames flew. By Page 7 it was just me and two people who refused to read my OP, so I just let it die.

I thought that the curse was lifted after that, but every thread I've made since then have continued to suffer from the 3 Page Curse.

Anyone else have the same problem as me?
What was the topic again?

It's usually a good idea to lurk the forums and get to know how it runs before jumping in and creating a topic. Hell, I joined the forums in october and I still have yet to make a topic.

When new members don't take the time to become familiar with the customs of the forum, it can make the older members a bit cranky. That's the only difference between newer members and older members; Knowing the ropes. If an older member posted the thread you posted, he'd be yelled at all the same, but they wouldn't because they know better.

I'm sorry certain members made you feel unwelcome, but you have to see where they are coming from. First impressions are all they have, so try to make a good one.

People will always try to criticize a thread whenever they can, it makes themselves look better than you, see. Some people need to look better than others or at least good for whatever personal reasons they might have, they might stop (I know I did although I was different) but I think it's more likely that they wont. Newer users are their prey, I wager that if I made a thread similar to yours no one would post in it, they would just leave me alone. A newer user, though, is easier to criticize and chances are they'll go away with out making a fuss.

It is good to see someone making a fuss about it though.

I doubt this thread will be stickied though, generally only staff made threads get stickied.

Just to advise, the thread had been done a million times before, your writing was horiffic, and you showed complete and utter disrespect for the Guidelines. However, for the second one, it seems that you have cured it to a legible extent. Good job.

However, don't feel wronged. It happens to the best of us, and those kinds of people who just say 'Report and Move On' are looked down on by most people, including The Mods, on these forums (I know this for a fact, as I used to do it myself, and received a warning PM by Wilson for doing so).
These forums are full of elitist pricks, sure, but you will find that the more popular users are the least elitist on the forums. Take, for example, Ultrajoe (who is proud, but not elitist), Labyrinth and NewClassic. They are three of the most awesome people on this forum, and there is a reason for that. In fact, 4Chan recently attacked us in order to show the elitists that they are not so high-and-mighty. I am not making that up, but it seems that most of them didn't take the hint.
However, over here we love our grammar. This makes us unlike the rest of the forums on the internet, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Anyway, I would like to welcome you to the forums and hope you enjoy your stay. Just don't feed the trolls, be nice to the newbies and follow the guidelines; that's all I ask.
Also: The Report Button is your friend.

I'm curious about something. Many times have I seen people say "This is my first thread!!!! Don't bash me, please :(((((((" or variations thereof.

What really makes me curious is why? Why is that an excuse? I'm not trying to bash anyone here, but even if you've never created a thread before you can be sensible about it. You can read the rules beforehand, you can think things through and consider if you really need to create a thread on the subject.

On the other hand, why should people care? So what if it's your first thread? If it's a bad thread, it's going to be bad, and reported, no matter if it's your first or your 200:th thread. If it's good, it's going to be appreciated, and no one is going to care how many posts you have before this one.
