Eh....

It's impossible to choose JUST one...

I'm gonna put like, three or four, because I can.

"If God's up there he's in a cold dark room
The heavenly host are just the cold dark moons.
He bent down and made the world in seven days
And ever since he's been walking away"

- from "Thin Blue Flame" by Josh Ritter.

"Like the comforting caress of a mother
Or a friend you've always known
It evokes such pain and significance
What was once is reduced to remembrance
And the generations pass without recompense"

- from "Cease" by Bad Religion.

"All the hurt i kept within
I blame myself for everything
For all the regret that remains
For all the pain"

- from "Polaris" by Ash

A few...
Barely listening is an epic song.

Power of the horde

"Surrounded by the enemy
The wolf among the hounds
Thunder turns to silence, it took...
A hundred to bring me down"

9 crimes by Damien Rice.

Leave me out with the waste, this is not what I do
It's the wrong kind of place to be thinking of you
It's the wrong time for somebody new
It's a small crime and I got no excuse
And is that all right, yeah?

Depresses the hell out of me.

'I hate them all.
I hate them all.
I hate myself for hating them,
so I'll drink some more.
I love them all.
I'll drink even more.
I'll hate them even more
than I did before.'

- The Other Side, The Strokes

What gets me is the lack off attempt at 'preatying' the lyrics at all unlike in other Strokes songs, they're just so simple which just makes it more of a gut puncher for me. Simple yet so relatable

"Then she leaves, with someone you don't know.
But she makes sure you saw her.
She looks right at you and bolts.
As she walks out the door,
your blood boiling
your stomach in ropes.
Oh and when your friends say,
"What is it?" You look like you've seen a ghost.?
Sometime around midnight-The Airborne Toxic Event
It reminds me of night that use to cause me a lot of grief.

"take me home country road, to the place where I belong"
although that's more of because we sang that song all the time at the camp I worked at for 2 years. We even had a version "take me home dinner-bell road", because dinner-bell was the name of the road leading into the camp

All of "Simple Twist of Fate" by Bob Dylan.

Specifically the last stanza:

"People tell me it's a sin
To know and feel too much within.
I still believe she was my twin, but I lost the ring.
She was born in spring, but I was born too late
Blame it on a simple twist of fate."

I've been in a situation more than once, where I thought I was in love with a girl, only to realize I was too late, and a (good) friend was already dating her.

So always look on the bright side of death (Whistle, whistle, whistely-diddily-doo)
Just before you draw your terminal breath (Whistle, whistle, whistely-diddily-doo)

Life's a piece of shit
When you look at it
Life's a laugh and death's a joke, it's true.
You'll see it's all a show
Keep 'em laughing as you go
Just remember that the last laugh is on you.
-Monty Python and the Life of Brains' "Always look on the Bright Side of Life"

A few from the Mountain Goats that always get to me:

"And I will get lonely
And gasp for air
And send your name up from my lips
Like a signal flare."
--"Get Lonely"

"And way out in Seattle, young Kurt Cobain
Snuck out to the greenhouse, put a bullet in his brain.
Snakes in grass beneath our feet,
Rain in the clouds above.
Some moments last forever,
But some flare out with love, love, love."
--"Love Love Love"

And, for something less downbeat:

"When you punish a person for dreaming his dream
Don't expect him to thank or forgive you.
The best ever death metal band out of Denton
Will in time both outpace and outlive you.
Hail Satan!"
--"The Best Ever Death Metal Band in Denton"

"But there's no sense crying over every mistake.
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake."

I remember the fist time I conferred the Second Degree acted in a play with a lot of monologues, and made a few mistakes. Afterwards, I was really hard on myself until I remembered GLaDOS' message.
that is fully valid, and the song is just great.
OT: for me, tis Squealing Pigs by Admiral Fallow. i see it as a song about how we should think about the future, and our lifestyle ("i cant help but think as i pick my mouth off the floor"(just got his teeth knocked out in a fight. its also hinted its about a smoker.)"will you still know me in a year?" either 'will i drive my friends off?' or 'will i be dead?', and how we shouldnt make bad decisions because our parents did "just cos your father did, doesnt mean you should too".
thats mainly why i like it.

The song "We'll Grind That Axe For A Long Time" by Pantera. It basically talks about how the band stayed true to themselves and they aren't going anywhere anytime soon. Also how everyone changes to suit society while Pantera stayed who they were since the beginning.

Wears 10 crowns, dragons heads
Southern are the sons, Lords unmatched
- Their eyes don?t look right, should they be trusted now?
Trashed-mouth Gods, avoided kings
With the spirit of revolt, the ghost of youth

(Chorus)
Every fucking year it stays the same
Everybody changes to suit the day
Out of pride I?ll isolate my fears
Never turned our backs on why we?re here
We?ll grind that axe for a long time

Follow close, train of fools
Just like them, just like you
- Their eyes don?t seem right.
?Easily impressed? plague, dressed up fake
No respect

(Chorus)
Every fucking year remains the same
Everybody sucks-up to suit the day
Out of hate I?ll isolate myself
Through the worst we still marched into hell
We?ll grind that axe for a long time (x4)
The smell in the air is chicken shit.

We?ll grind that axe for a long time (x2)
We'll grind that axe
We'll grind that axe for a long time

(Chorus)
Every fucking song remains the same
To everyone who sucks-up for the fame
Out of strength you know we speak the truth
Every trend that dies is living proof
We?ll grind that axe for a long time

And also Wasted Years by Iron Maiden, or really almost any Maiden song.
Annnnnnnnnd Worth Fighting For by Judas Priest. Ok I am done :p

'Today I sleep in the chair by the window,
It felt as if you'd returned.
I thought that you were standing over me,
When I woke there was no-one there.
I still love you,
Girl From Mars,' Ash - Girl From Mars

That one brings back some sharp memories that can still cut deep after nearly five years. Time just keeps on moving on though, eh?

I actually looked this song up for the sake of this thread. Feel a sudden and overwhelming urge to get blind drunk and scream curses at seagulls. But then, that's how I feel every night, so nothing new there.

Everything by Simon and Garfunkel. Everything.

If I had to pick a specific moment, the one line "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls" (from 'The Sound of Silence') just seems to get me. Come to the point, that entire song makes me almost tear up.

The chorus from Sabaton's the Final Solution.

When freedom burns
The final solution
Dreams fade away and all hope turns to dust
When millions burn
The curtain has fallen
Lost to the world as they perish in flames

Also, every lyric in this song. No exceptions.

My thoughts exactly Beautiful song <3

Anyway for me It's Exile Vilify (The National) I must have mentioned this song about 4-5 times already on these forums :p But man the lyrics are just...enchanting...

Exile
It takes your mind again
Exile
It takes your mind again
You've got suckers' luck
Have you given up?

Does it feel like a trial?
Does it trouble your mind the way you trouble mine?

I created the sound of madness, wrote the book on pain
Somehow I'm still here to explain
That the darkest hour never comes in the night
You can sleep with a gun
When you gonna wake up and fight for yourself?

For me it symbolizes that if I can get through hell, you can do it to.
Wake up and realize that your life could've been much worse.

The whole of "Space Doggity" by Jonathan Coulton. Made even worse when you know what happened to Laika, the first dog in space... *Sniff* Makes me depressed just thinking about it...

Sorry... I-I gotta go and give my dog a hug now...

Edit:
Lord Kase said:
A boy and his frog
"I'll miss you dad" - and the rest of the whole damn song
Hell I'm almost in tears just writing this
Also, this, especially the quiet little "I miss you dad" towards the end.

If this doesn't tug at your heartstrings, you have no soul.

Edit 2:
Also, from the closing theme from "Suburban Knights" (made worse after you've seen the whole thing):
"I don't want to end this way/In my flight of fantasy/Stand by my side, it will be okay/I don't want to end this way..."

'The end of a dream that is like no other
I'll chase it and chase it again
Until that dramatic moment is in my hand'

The translation is a bit rough, but I love the lyrics to this song, because it's about chasing your real dream, what you really want to do with your life.

Time goes by and I realize, that I?m alright
You thought nothing would be the same
But life comes round again
Quick wits and all curious
All caught up in what you say
And makes me grab the time
Before it slips away

I can?t stay and I cannot wait
And I?m grateful to whistle past a grave yard gate
The flicker fade is getting stronger
When the days start getting longer
I got the rhythm down now in the places we warred
The Golden Gate is like my diving board
And life is pointless
but what's so wrong with that?
