One of the reasons I keep coming back to Fallout 3 is GNR. Although the song selection is rather small, they absolutely NAIL the mood portrayed in the game. Also, shooting Super Mutants with a BB Gun while listening to those 50's songs during the dusk is one of those rare, rare experiences that only good games can provide.

I don't know if I'm too picky, but as far as I remember, most games I play have at least decent scores. Some have truly amazing ones. I think the audio part is very well represented lately in the gaming world.

Well, I hate to draw upon it, but Modern Warfare 2 really did have a fantastic score.
Well, it was done by Hans Zimmer, and he's fucking awesome.

OT: Another great example of the sort of thing Deus Ex: HR did is in Defcon. Not only was the music dynamically changed depending on the current situation, but when the shit hit the fan the music did a wonderful job of conveying the "Oh God, what have I done?" message.

Background music is there to simply help point your emotion in a certain direction; it's not meant to distract you from the game.

The only games that REALLY had their music stand out was Silent Hill, but that's because their music is... um... well...

Memorable, that's it!

Seriously, I remember in vivid detail one fight I had in SH3 in the sewers. Know what I remember most? The bizarre and attention-throttling soundtrack.
No "Promise (Reprise)"?

I like Betrayal more, to be honest, and thought it was more striking.

I'll mention Morrowind

ANd Metal Gear Solid 2
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/QiPon8lr48U" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>

My two favorites actually.
And of course the Retro Games music. Donky Kong Country etc.
But those were easily made, but hard to think of as a music artist.
I would link to the Extra Credits video but... WEll you know.

Umm... I think you do not notice the music in-games because you don't care about it. When I load a game first thing I notice and the last thing I remember is the music. I judge and listen game-music A LOT, hell I even compose music with game-music in mind.

If you think the music in game is tasteless, you need to start listening and/or playing classical instrument/music...

And once again, the indie developers prove their prevalence in another field: music. Here's five tracks from five games to be getting on with:

Although this mostly seems to be background stuff in the game, I noticed pretty much every track being different, so you can take that for what little it's worth.

Most of what makes the OST of the series unique is its MIDI/synthetic feel. About the only thing that sounds close to real is the piano, which definitely isn't in every track.

Chiptune, having less layers to work with even than MIDI, emphasises the few it uses better, I think. Pity nobody uses it any more.
Dun-dun-dun-dadun-DUN-dun!

More chiptune goodness. Also, popping in and out of rooms, and dying a lot, means you'll hear all the different tracks over and over... The remakes do it differently, though.

This one's all over the place, really, but the dominant genre seems most like industrial techno. And techno tends to be loud and take the fore. Once again, you'll be hearing these tracks until, like each level, they're burned into your brain.

I am going to have to disagree. I think there have been plenty of great soundtracks in recent times. In fact, I am listening to a bunch of the music posted in this thread right now, especially some of that Dynasty Warriors 4 music, I always thought it kicked ass. Anyway, maybe I don't know what I am talking about because I don't play consoles anymore and all the music on console games sucks or something.
One title I didn't see anyone mention yet was The Witcher 2. I thought it had a great OST.

I played Aion for about 5ish months and it's soundtrack has stuck with me long after I've stopped playing it. I remember reading reviews where the reviewer complained about the soundtrack being too diverse, not about how beautiful each piece of music was as a whole. Also, the World of Warcraft and Warcraft 3 soundtracks are permanently etched into my brain, but I don't have a problem with that considering how fantastic and appropriately "epic" they are.
