My grandfather was a Navy guy before WWII, he served on the Lexington, he ended up as a pretty high ranked hancho in the Civil Aviation Authority, saw the XB70 go down on radar.
My uncle was a seaman first class, he was officer of the deck on a sea going tug boat at nights. He had a lot of time at sea. He went on to work on the rail roads. He did have a lot of time at sea though.
Other uncle was infantry, ended up getting discharged for AWOL, surprisingly under an honorable discharge.
The one that I keep in mind for Veterans day is my grandfather on my Mother's side, he served in the pacific during WWII on a hospital ship. Saw some nasty stuff, like machine gunning of people who should have POWs in the ocean...
War isn't pretty, neither is military service, but it's the jobs they do that are all necessary.
Edit: Even the lowest ranked guys all do something useful for society, is what I'm saying.
