Do other people out there secretly, whether intentionally or not, avoid certain genres or artists around friends because they may not approve?
I don't enjoy anything "secretly", I'm quite open about my tastes in music or anything else. I see no reason not to be.

However, I won't play music around people who I know will dislike that particular music. For instance my girlfriend isn't into rap so I won't play it when I'm with her. I'm quite open about the fact that I listen to it on my own though.

I think that's a good attitude, but I sorta understand the thinking behind the OP. In your case, since you're in the music business, having eclectic tastes and a broad appreciation and understanding of all genres of music is a good thing - makes you easier to work with and speaks to your knowledge base as a music professional.

I'd imagine it would be very easy to see how individuals, as listeners or musicians or both assimilate what they listen to and/or write into a sense of personal identity. Even if we draw the wrong conclusions from it, what people like tells us a bit about them.

I'm in total agreement that being able to appreciate more genres of music is inherently good and one shouldn't feel guilt for enjoying music, but I can see WHY (often younger) people who take on music as identity are outside their comfort zone talking about Lady GAGA, if they're a self professed metal head, e.g.

____________

Anyway, I like Katy Perry, as something that's a far throw from my usual diet, particularly this sci fi themed video:

About halfway through she's kinda rocking the Asari look @ 2:08

Also, on the video, I like the combined effect of the special effect makeup + post video post processing. It's very effectively edited, IMO.

Fuck?why this thread?
Okay fine. I'll admit it.

I...I actually enjoy Rebecca Black. Her new song makes me smile and the simplicity of Friday makes me giggle. I listen to it unironically.
Please don't kill me.
You, sir. Are a true hero.

OT: Pretty much anything with Ludacris in it. I love his total ridiculousness and complete lack of irony.

....Vocaloid songs. One of my greatest fears is that one of my friends will find my youtube account, which has dozens of them favorited and liked.

Pop/R & B music. There's some genuinly good music from that genre. It's a shame it's surround by so much bullcrap.

Marina and the Diamonds I like. Some Lady Gaga. Rhianna etc.

MF DOOM!!

Hell. This isn't even a secret at this point. Everyone knows now.
Why would ANYONE be ashamed to enjoy MF Doom?

My neighbours must know America's Most Blunted off by heart by now.

I'm a fan of pop punk. Bands like Blink 182, Green Day, and Goldfinger just suck me right in with the style of music...it's so.....deliberate.

Of course, I am a fan of actual punk as well. Dead Kennedys, The Clash, and The Ramones. Bands like those are awesome as well.

Not really, i listen to quite a bit of pop (Lady Gaga, Rihanna etc.) so some people try to make fun of me for that. But i'm a stubborn bastard who usually just tells them shut up.

However i have not told many people that i've gotten into Slow Jam/Bedroom Burner/Babymaker R&B lately because it is so unlike me. I'm probably the least romantic person ever. But c'mon, how could you hate this.

I don't hide anything about myself. Including music I like. I don't listen to lyric'd songs, because 1) I don't listen to lyrics, and 2) I feel focussing on lyrics takes away focus from the music, for both the listener, and those who create the music. Though chanting music is cool. Artist I enjoy is Yuki Kajiura, who's chanting music is beautiful.

Some hip hop / rhythm and base songs. Very rarely, but it does happen sometimes. However, I don't really hide that fact.

Lyrics are also a tune in itself. I rarely listen to the actual words, but the singing them gives out a melody of its own.
