A music genre you think isn't good right now, but can be.

A bit of a specific subject...Basically, what genre of music do you think is bad or not it's best at this current time, but can be so much better if given the right artists or creative thinking.

I'm going to go with everyone's personal favorite Dubstep. Dubstep, in my opinion, has real potential of being an amazing genre of music, a new flavor of the electronic section in music, but at the same time it can easily become horrible crap like some "artists" make it now. Dubstep is very easy to make, but very difficult to make it sound good or pleasing. I used to be a dubstep fan of anything that popped out but it wasn't until I saw a few lonesome artists that I realized what dubstep could be, and how much better it was.

If you want an example of what I'm talking about, try this:

The "drop" actually feels part of the song, like it belongs in this song, where as most it feels random and unrelated. But that's my choice and my opinion. Anyone else? I'm curious to see how other people feel about the music of today.

I agree there are far to many people who don't put in enough thought and effort into electronic music. It truly is my favorite genre that's popular, and I love it when people take it to the next level.

Like that.

I also mourn the decline of good hip-hop in the mainstream.

I'm very happy to see some new videos popularizing the cool stuff.

None of them. You know why? Because there is always going to be at least one good musician in any given genre.

Don't like the mainstream stuff? Don't listen to it. Search the depths of the internet to find the more obscure people. Broaden your horizons to include new genres or hybrid genres. Hell, just listen to the older stuff you liked if you seriously can't find anything redeemable about the current stuff.

What's that? I'm being a stick in the mud? Fine, I'll play along.

Mainstream Rap.

There have been a few lesser known rap artists linked in various threads over the last few months that I did enjoy, but unfortunately I can't remember any of them. But I really have a hard time listening to most of the rap that gets played on any radio stations.

Most pop music. There are the occasional good songs, most recently "Somebody That I Used to Know" by Gotye, popping up, but almost immediately, they are followed by stuff like "Call Me Maybe" by Carly Rae Jepsen, or the latest Pitbull/Katy Perry track.

I can't believe I'm saying this but that actually wasn't bad. Does that really count as Dubstep? All the Dubstep I've heard just destroys any pitch, tone, melody or even tempo with ugly pointless wubs.

That's pretty cool too. That's a lot closer to the electronic music I'm usually partial to. Both of those songs seem to be following this trend I've noticed in electronic music of having a more laid back kind of sound to them. They evoke the feeling of a warm summer evening on the beach watching the sun going down.

OT: I don't really know of any genre that "could" be good. I generally take each genre as it is. If genres ever evolve in any significant way they tend to be given a different label, so to me it doesn't so much look like a genre can be more than it is, but rather I'm not listening to the right sub-genre, or it hasn't been invented yet. That said, there are plenty of genres which are mostly crap but with some brilliant exceptions.

Funk influenced metal.

Right now all we have is some Extreme songs, Infectious Grooves and like one Trepalium song.
There needs to be more funky metal that doesn't devolve into crumby nu metal.

Noise Instrument. Seriously, this is just weird...

Like...I'm not even kidding. People should get off of dubstep being bad and fuck with this.

Rap isn't good in any capacity, especially today's rap, but if you erased all the vulgarities and idiocy and sex talk, you might actually be able to get something done with it, maybe.

Agreed. This is pretty much all my thoughts on the subject.

At this precise moment in time, Dream Pop, and Indie music is doing rather well for itself. So I have no complaints with regards to that kind of music. Even mainstream pop is making steady improvements to it's overall structure, with many more underground influences coming in to play.

I would have to say punk really, too much pop punk around nowadays, not enough of the rawer stuff, that originally defined the genre. It's sad how Green Day is what the definition of punk is now. Sid Vicious must be rolling in his grave.

Punk really needs a good shot in the arm, it's like the punkers have just totally forgot what actual punk is.

Flobots? Try Flobots:
The only genres that are really excelling at the moment are tech metal and prog metal. We've got Gojira and Trepalium coming up with intelligent tech death, we've got Meshuggah going from strength to strength, we've got Opeth and Blotted Science and Periphery and Monuments and Animals as Leaders and Terakai and Protest the Hero and tons more of gaining attention by the day.

So my answer to you is everyone else. Mainstream metal needs a kick up the bum and it needs to shed all of the boring rock bands pretending to be metal like Black Veil Brides. Mainstream rock pretty much sucks at the moment. MUSE stood out for a while but it seems like they might be going downhill and moving even further away from anything rock or metal influenced. Pop music seems to recycle the same drum beats and stupid sparkly scale runs over and over. Hip hop is just... bad. And on the list goes...

Of course not.

There are some [http://www.youtube.com/watch?&v=tbNmi9qpMAM] good [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8F3UE9qFsg] rap [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8fzuWb6Qi6k] songs, but rap as a genre is horrible (and only getting worse with every generation).

sicne when is the best of a genre judged by whats most popualr? you ask most electronic music fans (with taste) if Skrillex is the absolute best of dubstep and they will laugh your ass off

only one of those I would accept, and I DONT think rap as a genre is bad because there is good stuff out there

I don;t see why people bother with "mainstream" if its really so bad

and no rap as a genre is not bad
