sicne when is the best of a genre judged by whats most popualr? you ask most electronic music fans (with taste) if Skrillex is the absolute best of dubstep and they will laugh your ass off

only one of those I would accept, and I DONT think rap as a genre is bad because there is good stuff out there

It isn't. The distance between good rap is much larger than any other genre I've seen in a long while. Search for dubstep, you can find some good dubstep quite easily. Search for Metal and Rock you'll find the same. It's incredibly difficult to find good rap.

Also, why would you link handlebars. You just ruined the next week of my life. ;__;

its just if you were to say "rap as a genre" is terrible then that means you wouldn't like rap in any form..which is fine, but

I'm just sick of people bashing it is all...yeah, mainstream rap is idiotic, but even the "ego trip" stuf can be good

General statements are not to be taken as wholly encompassing. There are always exceptions.

None of them. You know why? Because there is always going to be at least one good musician in any given genre.

There have been a few lesser known rap artists linked in various threads over the last few months that I did enjoy, but unfortunately I can't remember any of them. But I really have a hard time listening to most of the rap that gets played on any radio stations.
Agree with all this. I suggest Lupe Fiasco and MC Frontalot. You'll enjoy.

So my answer to you is everyone else. Mainstream metal needs a kick up the bum and it needs to shed all of the boring rock bands pretending to be metal like Black Veil Brides. Mainstream rock pretty much sucks at the moment. MUSE stood out for a while but it seems like they might be going downhill and moving even further away from anything rock or metal influenced. Pop music seems to recycle the same drum beats and stupid sparkly scale runs over and over. Hip hop is just... bad. And on the list goes...
I don;t see why people bother with "mainstream" if its really so bad

and no rap as a genre is not bad
I just said it isn't bad. Hence the link to the Flobots song that you edited away.

The problem with mainstream music generally sucking so hard is that it shouldn't. Good bands ought to get recognized but instead we see generic pop punk/metalcore/deathcore/whatever band number 5000 on the music channels.

Don't like the mainstream stuff? Don't listen to it. Search the depths of the internet to find the more obscure people. Broaden your horizons to include new genres or hybrid genres. Hell, just listen to the older stuff you liked if you seriously can't find anything redeemable about the current stuff.

What's that? I'm being a stick in the mud? Fine, I'll play along.

Mainstream Rap.

I definetly agree, I mean if your looking in the top 40 for anything good (or to suit your tastes) your doing it wrong

why do people get so worked up over it? I discovered all kinds of obscure stuff through Itunes

as for rap....mabye you just don't like rap? I mean no matter how good any "death metal" is I'm never going to like death metal

Lupe Fiasco actually is one of the ones I like. Never heard of the other one, though. I shall go to investigate.

The problem with previous rap is that then, now, and most likely in the future, it will maintain the aggressive and vulgar feel that it has, with the way the words are slurred, toned, or detailed. That is the primary issue with Rap, even when it isn't vulgar, you feel it is, or at least you feel it's heavily angry.

Of the top of my head, ska punk. There are a few good bands kicking around (Streetlight Manifesto, Reel Big Fish), but most of them are still just clinging on from the 90's. The few new bands that come out now sound bland and awful.

I think people just like making huge deals out of insignificant things.

And I loooooooove it when people point at all of the Top 40 lists or whatever else and then claim that nothing good is being released these days. Like you said, Vault, they're doing it wrong.

As far as rap is concerned, it's one of the genres that I don't tend to search out myself. Most of the "popular" songs don't appeal to me, and it's a genre that I know very little about because I tend to focus more on the instrumentation and structure of a song than the lyrical components and vocal-rhythm composition.

There's rap I like, as with practically every other genre that exists, but I'd be hard-pressed to give any recommendations to a person looking for new rap artists to listen to.

somtimes anger is good....I love the raw rage in Emienms "Way I am"

[quote/]vulgar feel that it has, with the way the words are slurred, toned, or detailed[/quote]

you refering to angry gangsta rap there?...some rappers are slury yeah, I dont like them (I will admit though I like Kanye even though hes nott he most skilled)

I dont know Techn9ne is somwhat "gangsta" but he has the lyrical skill to back it up

One trip to Youtube later -

Thanks, I'm liking what I've heard so far.

Like...I'm not even kidding. People should get off of dubstep being bad and fuck with this.
I... think you're missing the point of things like this.
Why do you say that?

I agree with the point on dubstep. I've heard (and LOVE) a lot of dubstep remixes of songs, but on it's own, I really dislike it. Especially Skrillex. I just... really hate all of his stuff.

Also, I'm going to go with rap. Hear me out: early 90's was when rap was at it's pique, and there are definitely still some great rappers around today (Lupe Fiasco is amazing). But when the majority of rap songs have the same obnoxious message and downright stupid lyricism, it completely defeats the purpose of the genre. Rap, no matter if it's about political corruption or fuckin' bitches, should be worded in a way that helps deliver the message.
The worst offender in my books is Nicki Minaj. Here's hoping she becomes obsolete very soon.

really? I disagree...a female rapper hitting the mainstream I don;t think is a bad thing

but that said she does tend to do alot of pop...personally I think shes not so bad when shes actually rapping

I don't think that was made for the purpose of making "beautiful music." I think it's supposed to be more of a "fuck you" sort of thing. It's Anti-Art.
Who knows with this guy. Seriously, maybe he was trying to make "Beautiful" music?
