A New Direction for WW2 Games

I just finished reading an IGN Preview for "The Sabatour" a game which has you playing as a disgruntled and vengeful Irishman bombing Nazi's in an open world version of Paris, and I got to thinking, is this title and Velvet Assassin a new direction for the WW2 Game?

Personally I really hope so, I figure if you MUST use the WW2 setting like so many game devs desperately want to, lets ditch the saturated market of the Saving Private Ryan/Band of Brothersinfluenced ulta serious and realistic FPS in favor of some Where Eagles Dare/Guns of Navaronne style games instead.

WW2 cinema, which seems to be more important than the actual war in terms of these games, has more to it than just grit heavy war stories and I look forward to some titles that follow the more adventuresome side of wartime cinema.

Anyone else looking forward to some more interesting titles in the WW2 setting? Anyone want to see something specific done with WW2 games?

Will even a change in style of game help? Should the setting be allowed to rest for a time?

DISCUSS!

Maybe a game where you are a jewish man stuck in Auschwitz, and you have to escape and help the others

That's possibly one of the worst ideas ever.

I really like the way Saboteur is looking, looking forward to playing it.

sorry to break it to you, but sabatour IS velvet assassin.
For some stupid reason they thought the super bad ass open world/black and white thing wasn't cool i guess, so they changed it to velvet assassin.
But yea its pretty cool. i'll be preordering it ASAP.
I totally agree with the saving private ryan though. they should do some of the romanticized WWII stuff, OR if they try to keep it real they should bring the focus onto other groups, such as the Russians, or maybe resistance fighters. Hell, even africa would be cool. or playing the axis powers...

A game that understands it's not trying to be realistic is a good game. "The Saboteur", at the conceptual level seems interesting like every other games, but let's hope the plot will be an intelligent one and also help show more about the french resistance in a brighter light.

that sounds ok but what about the touchiness about prisoner camps?

If you show to much of the reality it gets a high age rating.
If you show to little you get some angry jews complaining about making the nazies seem slightly nice.

I always thought the Resistance made the French in WW2 look good,

The French Army in WW2 = Commanded By Idiots and Surrender Monkeys

The French Resistance = Badass Mother Fuckers

Though the Dutch resistance were scarier by my understanding... so much so that the Nazi's tried desperately to starve the entire country to death to stop them.

Considering the generous amount of WWII games there are, it'd be pretty hard to try anything original because pretty much all corners have been searched.

Maybe one in which America has the evil dictator, or where Britain sides with the Nazis.

Vietnam? they did that once, wasn't that good..

WWI? i had this discussion before, it probably wont get made because the target market wouldn't be interested in something that doesnt shoot a thousand bullets in one burst

What we need is a Tannhauser game...

or an Arrowsmith game...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arrowsmith_(comics)

Those would be pretty cool in videogame form...

I'd like to play a World War Two Biggles [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JdCQwigh6H8] game. It would be like Star Fox, but with Spitfires instead of spaceships and instead of Peppy Hare saying "Do a barrel roll!" there'd be Algy saying "Jolly good shot old chap!"

So? If all of the people working on WWII games got working on Vietnam games there would surely be a great game, possibly with a dual storyline following both factions.

Still, it would be pretty cool to see.

This. Except, I'm sick of war altogether. Let's try and come up with a new idea for why the player has to shot everything that moves and looks slightly different.

The only thing I'll buy now, is if it's from the german soldiers side. After all your average Heinrich in the german army werent all that knowing about concentration camps and such. I'm pretty sure it was mostly the top leaders that took care of that etc.

Yeah I have high hopes for Saboteur. Hopefully Pandemic will manage to pull this off and give us a change of pace for WW2 games.
