I think we need a new gameplay innovation for shooters there all either 'You can slow down time' or 'You can regenerate health'

i vote for a new innovation one that could change the world. What do you guys think a new Innovation should be?

what about this instead of a Health bar you have a out line of your character and it shows Health for each of your limbs for instance

losing all health in 1 leg Causes your character to limp and run slower
both legs and you cant move
lose health in 1 arm your accuracy has gone really bad but using a one handed weapon like a Pistol wouldn't affect your accuracy.
lose both arms and you surrender and if you make a enemy surrender instead of killing him you get more EXP
lose health in your head and you die
lose health in your torso you stagger and your accuracy and Move Speed gets worst

Each Class will have there own Objective to complete

If you have a medic on your team he can heal your limps but he cant make it all better if you lose ALL your health in a limp.
If a Teammate dies while you are a medic you can pull out your defibrillator and your have about 25% chance that he will be revived
Medic's will get more EXP for Healing and Reviving then Killing a enemy.

The Medic's objective is to find a VIP to heal and patch up and bring him to a safe area.

A Assault Class will provide your Squad with Ammo and will carry the larger guns he can also make cover with resource's but cant while in combat.
Cover can be broken if the enemies place a C4 on the cover
Assault class can pilot tanks and Heli's

Assault's Objective is too keep the enemies from harming his squad and make sure no enemy breaches the Safe Area.

A Recon Class will mark areas of the map in which the medic Assault should go [eg marks out a point where he should lay down the cover or in medic's case a good enter and exit strategy]

there objective is to get his troops in and out of the battlefield with as many objectives complete and as little damage done to there side at all cost.

More objectives complete = More Exp

Of course this is just a idea that i thought up nearly on the spot

anyway what do you think would be a good idea for shooters instead of the usually kill everything what could they do to spice up the formula?

Basically Deus Ex had that exact health system you just stated, it's not a new concept at all.

Also, all the classes just seem like needlessly complex versions of games that already exist (TF2 comes to mind). Not to mention the plenty of objective based game types that we know are incredibly fun.

The main issue with the prospect of innovation is that people don't play online FPSes for a complex system of aims, they go on it for simple, stupid fun. The advantage to online FPSes is that you don't have to think much: it's quick and easy gratification, and that's what makes it so fun. For a more complex experience people tend to move towards the RPG genre or something along those lines.

Not to say that innovation wouldn't be nice, it's just that I think online FPSes aren't in a bad place and that we don't need a big change for at least another few years.

not to be a dick, but I would play for a complex system of aims. i see your point, the fact that you would be relying on others to play as a team, for a team objective, and there will still be those who just go frag-hunting. however if you look at competitive FPS games, proper clan v clan matches or CS:S mixes, i would say that kinda destroys the simple stupid fun aspect.

to the second bit of what i quoted, i don't think OP was trying to say we need a big overhaul of the whole genre or something, just suggesting a more team based game concept which would be nice to have.

OT: the limb system reminds me of fallout, ofc in a FPS it will be a bit more intense than an RPG. haven't played deus ex myself so can't comment there. however the whole team aspect, especially with recon/medic classes does sound interesting, provided the people who play them play as a team. overall though, nice idea buddy ^^

i think the biggest issue with this idea is that the bulk of people wouldnt like it so the companies would be losing sales cause the bulk of the fps market are so scared of change that they have a heart attack if a company changes the HUD colour in the sequel.

I was going to say X-COM. It wasn't that complex and it wasn't an FPS, but limb damage was present and soldiers could be knocked unconscious by things like non-lethal wounds and smoke inhalation.

Still, it may not work for an FPS. I would hate to find myself crippled and unable to move, but not dead and unable to respawn.
