I must say the concept of a schizophrenic protagonist intrigues me immensely. Better to even not tell the player that they're playing as a schizophrenic character, but rather let them try to piece it together themselves. I've always been interested in how those with mental disorders think.
I am of the exact same opinion. I've also held for a long time the theory that a mental disorder has the highest potential as a source of internal conflict, even though I've NEVER seen it done well. I haven't actually been looking very hard, though. Anyone have some good examples?

I have thought about an insane protagonist idea from a different angle; the character would be schizophrenic, but the player would be the schitzophrenic part. What the character does during days would be mainly out of players control and shown mostly through cutscenes of key moments (there isn't that much interesting happening in a normal day), but every night player got the control to work for whatever goal the game has.

Pretty much like Tyler Durden from Fight Club.

1) A protagonist with extremely long legs. I'm talking somewhere between ten and fifty meters, and not in proportion. She could impale people on spikes and leave their corpses on the sides of tall buildings.

2) An protagonist with an invisible moustache. He looks like a normal guy. Everyone thinks he's a normal guy. Only he knows it's there. Waiting.

3) Helen Keller: Tactics.

EDIT: Also lesbians.

There are some story elements that come into play here that I dont think have been done before but the pay off is the gameplay possiblities. If you focus on the paranoia and hullutionation factor you have a game world with no rules.

2) Homeless guy.
GTA kind of touches on making a better life thru crime but this makes it seem more justified. Plus its a pretty timely subject.

3) Gay without being overly flambouat.
This is just one of those things that guys always seem to stereotype and never take on in a mature manor.
Well you just completely called out all I want from a new protagonist. All though with the hobo, you should be able to make a VERY funny hobo looking guy, you know, with the sterotypical green jacket, paints, white shirt and a bag over their head.
