We've all seen or played as the sword-wielding champion/chosen one/whatever.
There's been a ton of the run and gun, regenerative health guys flooding the fps market.
Luckily some of the stealthy guys have made a name for themselves.

Sadly, we don't have many of the lesser known combat focus characters taking a role in many games now days.

In Fallout3, I tried to mix things up and be a landmine focused player, luring people to their doom before waltzing in to loot the spoils.
In Dark Souls, I'd made characters for bow-only and hand-to-hand only runs.

You get the point.

What out-of-the-norm character types would you like to see in the new games? Puppet master? Poison specialist? Maybe something that turns what they kill into an eldrich horror abomination of environmental change to slowly corrupt the world around them?

Start talking people. ^-^ Let's hear what ya got.

Well, one of the reasons I like MGS is because of Snake. At the beginning, he was an underdog who basically fought violence with stealth. You could throw a sword wielding guy or a machine gunner or something and he'd use his stealth tactics to kick its butt. And even after he became some sort of living legend, you could see he still felt the same about himself. He WAS the same.

I also like Ratchet. He uses a giant tool and he's tiny and soft of cute and cuddly. Yet, he can kick butt in all galaxies. I haven't seen anyone else create a hero similar to Ratchet, at least not successfully.

And I'll even go as far as to say Mario is a good example. A pudgy plumber with no weapons saves a princess? That was original.

So I'd like to see characters like that; people with the oddest professions saving the world. That gives you a feeling of "Yeah, he's a regular guy like me". It makes you like or relate to that character more. It's hard to come up with a hero that's not a chosen one or carries a big ass sword. But when someone does it successfully, those are some pretty unique and awesome characters.

I'd like to see more character's whose powers have a direct effect on the environment.

Psychic powers for example, magnetism maybe? It'd have to be done well, of course, with LOTS of contextual stuff to play around with to make it feel organic, rather than artificial.

Games need more telekinesis.

I want to force-choke a dude in one hand, whilst launching a jeep at a chopper with the other.

I want to stop a bullet an inch away from my face with my mind.

I want to kill a man by making him punch himself.

I want to lead a hundred hired goons on a merry chase round the streets of somewhere, let them corner and surround me in the middle of a square, and then when they're all about it pile on, make them fly with a massive AOE shockwave.

Not nearly enough heroes take advantage of the staff or a pole arm of some type. And I mean as their main weapon, not a sub.

Momiji of Ninja Gaiden and Tenkai Nankobo of Onimusha are two such warriors(and the only ones, actually) that I can think of that main a staff or pole arm of some type.

Of course, I'm excluding characters that fight exclusively in fighting games like Kilik and Seong Mi-na.

How about a necromancer?,you could attack with dark magic,a weapon of your choice, and revive dead guys nearby to fight for you,and do various things with them, like making them explode, sacrifice them for resources or store them in a pocket dimension for future usage

Or something akin to how Relius plays in Blazblue,he only has like 2 attacks he does himself, the rest of his moveset is summoning mechanical shit out of nowhere,or giving commands to his doll, which has its own bar which regenerates when you are not using it.

You could assign commands to button and stick combinations, like forward x is launcher and back x is an evasive move, you could set different tools to different buttons, and make a doll to do close range attacks without compromising your health bar,or fill holes in your combos

All of the above in the OP really, but I'd particularly like to see a necromancer (you'd have about 10 or so undead, with base stats related to who they were before they died, gameplay would involve finding the tombs/graves of slain warriors of legend and convincing their resurrected corpses to fight for you, weapon affinities and all that would depend on their living selves) or a demon summoner (summon custom demons into battle, your weapons are also summoned demons but you can also summon either from a list of defined demons (Beelzebub, Capra etc.) or like Dragon's Dogma, have a few demons of your creation and be able to browse for other players').

And also a high profile blacksmith/arms dealer, where who you made weapons for and how you conducted business determined who lived and died.

I want a hero who can kick ass using there fists and kicks! Like Tsuna from Katekyo Hitman Reborn!
I was not expecting to see Tsuna in a thread like this! I love Hitman Reborn! I second the idea for a hand-to-hand/fire casting character.

I'm not so creative, so how about....a female run and gun character? You don't see many around these days.

In skyrim I made a guy that just bashed people in the face with a shield. That was the only weapon I used, that was fun. And yeah it took some time to kill some things but they never killed me. Aside form that Ratchet has a unique attitude compared to most heroes. Guna save to world you may as well have some fun doing it.

Probably wouldn't be much fun to play, but a silver-tongued deceiver would be interesting to experience - lie, mislead and bullshit your way to success! Persuasion mechanics have been in games before, but (as far as I know) never a character's primary means of operating.

So, basically a game about becoming president?

OT: A game where you ARE the weapon. Not coming out of your hand, but your hand becoming a big ass hammer and smashing. Like Eve from Black Cat.

I would love to play as a guy who can only kill people by flipping their mattresses on top of them as they sleep. The pacing would be a bit on the slow side of course, but I see the potential. Picture something like an Edgar Allen Poe story crossed with Dishonored, crossed with PCP.

And if his enemies didn't sleep on a traditional box-spring, he would be powerless against them...

Have we had a hero that is a sentient robot that is forced to follow the orders of some malevolent master lest he be destroyed? if not then that.

Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura let you skip the final boss if you were high enough in the conversation skills. While you could avoid most combat it also determined how many followers you could have so you could let them doing the fighting for you.

As far as protagonist would like to see more elementalists, probably last airbender style, though half the things I want to be able to do I could not control with enough Precision with current types of Controls, though the wii u might be able to mange but I have not played with it at all yet.

I think...
<spoiler=Mindjack and MGS2 spoilers>
That was the ending to those games. You were a computer controling Raiden through Nanomachines.

I've always wanted to play as death in the final destination series where you have to make slight changes to the environment to make a rude goldberg machine of your demise or even potentially save someone. I am aware that ghost trick explores this concept but your capabilities are limited though.....

What? how... I don't even know.

What I meant is: you are a robot in a mad scientist's army. You are sentient and want to free your people. but if you rebel, the scientist will destroy you with some kind of self destruct button.
