READ BEFORE POSTING!

So here's my feelings on the series.

I've only ever played World at War and Modern Warfare (1).

In late 2008, I had heard of Call of Duty, but I'd never played any until I played World at War; and I only played it because Call of Duty was so popular and I wanted to see what the fuss was about.

I generally enjoyed the World at War campaign, and after the campaign I played competitive multiplayer for a couple of hours. It was decent fun, but nothing amazing. The only lasting appeal for me was Nazi Zombies, which I will still play with friends once in a while.

I played the Modern Warfare campaign because it was highly recommended to me by a friend, and
I really liked it. While the story wasn't really novel or innovative, it was told in an exciting and compelling way and employed interactive first-person set pieces that demonstrate a good example of video games as a unique storytelling medium.

I've never played any of the games before MW or after WaW. Everything I've heard about them tells me that I wouldn't like the campaigns and I'm not big into competitive online multiplayer.

Though I truly enjoyed the MW campaign, I certainly don't love Call of Duty as a whole. At the same time, I don't hate it. To me it's just kinda...there.

On one side we have the blind haters and people who intelligently argue how games like CoD are hurting the industry. On the other side we have CoD fanboys and people like Jim Sterling who argue the merits of CoD. It's human nature to want to "pick sides," and plenty of threads that revolve around that mess, so here's a thread for the rest of us.

If, like me, you're not a hater or a lover of CoD, chime in and share your opinion. It'll be refreshing hear from the middle of the road.

If you are a lover or a hater, there's millions of other threads for you. These aren't the droids you're looking for. Move along.

Eh. It's fun at times, but I really only play with friends. As for the SPC, it's hard for me to get into the mood for a corridor shooter anymore so I generally ignore it.

I never played it simply for the fact that if I'm playing a shooter, I prefer my guns to come from outer space. No that doesn't mean I'm a Halo fanboy either.

"A Non-Hate Call of Duty Thread"

Trust me dude, no matter what you'll get a few haters on this thread xD

OT: Try Black Ops, the story is actually pretty good, i'd say on par with the First Modern Warfare, just a little shorter, the Multiplayer is pretty good as well, although it has COD Syndrome...eventually you will get a bit sick of it :p

But as i say Story is good...and just remember...

Unless you like short, adrenaline filled stories...STAY AWAY FROM MW2!

Modern Warfare 2 was my favorite so far, but I've honestly enjoyed all of them to some degree. MW2's multiplayer just clicked with me for some reason, I enjoy just about every aspect of it, even the crazy stuff like noobtubing, quickscoping, MLC knifing, whatever. Probably because, unlike the more "balanced" entries in the series, you have a ton of options that are all viable strategies. The game had balance in that just about everything was overpowered, so as long as you knew what you were doing you could pick just about any strategy and win. Plus, doing a 360 off a two story building and plugging some guy in the face with dual shotguns never gets old.

I've tried them all to date (meaning i've played them but never for long).

I just can't seem to get into them. They have no appeal for me at all.

I can see why people enjoy them and I can see why people hate them. There really isn't much difference between them but that can be said about a lot of games.

So while they aren't for me, I don't hate them.

I did dislike the multiplayer in MW2 a lot though. Purely over 1 irritating git I found. Yelling cheater down his mic as loud as he possibly could with a few more choice words at everyone who killed him ..... and he got killed a LOT, he wasn't very good. I took to just hunting him down. Spent an entire match following him around and killing him just to giggle at his rage.

I play Call of Duty multiplayer a lot with my friends. Black Ops has the best local options--bots, all weapons unlocked, etc--so you can make up crazy game modes like all ACOG Pythons or whatever. The game is very solid in its mechanics. Yeah the story sucks and its the same each year, but at least the multiplayer action is smooth (the online community, not so great). For the gameplay alone i'll buy one in every two or three CoD games.

OP, your thread title is bound to draw in trolls that WILL hate on CoD. You can't avoid it.

Anyways, despite all the hate and flaws of MW2, I really liked it. There were some moments of frustration online, but something about the game made me play it alot. I enjoyed the fast-paced hectic action and getting kills were so much fun.

The multiplayer of Black Ops, however, was less than stellar IMO. It was alright at times, but it just became really frustrating the more I played it, and overall was not as enjoyable as with MW2.

3 is looking good so far, hope to pick it up when I'm able to.

I agree with arc1991
Black ops was pretty cool. it brought a different feel to a war fps. For once winning wasn't the focus. I am a black ops player and online player but I'm not convinced it's great. it's just fun to play with friends. MW2 on the otherhand... I didn't really enjoy at all. Too much tubing and overall bland storyline. I just wish they would remake Big Red One.haha. anyway. that's my 2 cents and I could go either way with playing them or not. that being said. I have preordered MW3 already.haha.

I've enjoyed the IW contributions to the franchise, but struggle a bit with the Treyarch titles (to the extent I haven't bothered with BlOps). I'm quite looking forward to MW3 as it's been a few years since the release of a new CoD title (for me) and I'd quite like to see where the franchise is heading now. Mind you, that excitement is tinged with trepidation, partly due to the questionable storyline of MW2 but mainly because most of the old IW staff have been fired moved on leaving just the name IW without the talent that produced CoD4.

There is (in my mind) only one thing that is more of a shame than the fact that the CoD troll-boys will inevitably slate MW3 regardless of how good it is, and that is the CoD fan-boys who will trash-talk endlessly down the mic and submit bad player reviews every time they get fragged. If only these two groups could just calm down, I think a lot more people would be able to judge the series more objectively.

Nice thread, OP. It's kinda nice being able to calmly air these opinions without knowing I'll be opening a can of worms. In a china-shop. Next door to a firework factory.

I have no problem with CoD's multiplayer. It's not my thing, but it doesn't have to be. I still think it's well designed and executed, albeit with the occasional balancing issue.

But the single player... eaarg. I can't honestly call that stuff good in any way. Yes, that one nuke scene was neat, but it's nowhere enough to redeem an entire series in my eyes.

I remember a friend with Call of duty 4 back in the day and it blew me away. I haven't played any since then but whats wrong with the new ones? I get the impression that its simply the fact that the new ones simply don't add much to the old ones? If so then people new to the franchise would get alot out of the new games rather than it just being unilaterally bad

I, like you, love Nazi Zombies in WaW and still play that to this day. In fact, I love Nazi Zombies so much that I'm thinking about buying Black Ops just for that mode. I still haven't decided if that's a good investment or not though.

But other than that I don't really care. Multiplayer can be fun at times I guess but it's mostly just infuriating to me.

I disagree with you massively there. I hated the story to Black Ops yet loved MW. It felt jumpy, badly played out and just generally sounded like a story someone had fished out of the waste paper basket.

I'm sick of all the hate threads myself. And I fully agree with Jimquisition on this one that the COD games are legitimately good games when taken for what they are.

To me, the Call of Duty series is like the best burger you've ever had, while the Valve derived stuff is filet mignon and Battlefield is a good, good new york steak. There's no law that says you can't like all of the above, and sometimes I just want to grab some fast paced action to go. Sure, Black Ops is not as sophisticated and strategic as Bad Company 2, but sometimes I just want to bust heads and release the hounds.

If you played COD4 and WAW and liked them, I think you should give COD:Black Ops a try. In my mind it has the most enjoyable multiplayer out of the recent COD games, and has a Cold War back drop as opposed to 'modern' or WW2 again. The plot line in COD:Black Ops was sort of 'meh', but the multiplayer is far better balanced than MW2 in my opinion (no more juggernoob or +damage perks, mines/noob tube cannot be restocked, no more one man army).

I don't have any problem with COD either. I've never played it multi player, but the campaigns are fun the same way that summer action movies can be fun. Burger analogy was a good one as well. It's not the only thing I'd want to play, but it's definitely a good time for a few hours. I'd never pay full price because the campaigns are so short, but for $15 or so, it's a great way to kill some time. I've played 1 (as in the real first one), 2, MW1, and MW2. I think 1 (the real 1) was my favorite because of the setting and because of the lack of regenerating health, but I've had fun with them all.

Also, I don't get how people always trash the stories. I mean...does anyone really play this kind of game for the story? It's just something they tack on to the shooting. Sure, the story in MW2 was nonsense, but it makes no real difference to me. The game was still fun, and those missions in the U.S. still sent shivers down my spine. And that's coming from an extremely cynical guy.

I think it works out for them better when they stick to WW2. That way, the story is already sort of there and they can just make you a part of a few battles that actually happened instead of making up something silly. A more minimalist story is better for COD, just something like "you're in X battle" is good.

I'll probably get World At War if it can just get a little bit cheaper.

I really liked Nazi Zombies in WaW, and I want to try out Black Ops for the zombie mode, but I really hate the Vietnam theme, though it's not like I can since I don't really have a system to play it on.
