3 years ago i tried out that Pirates of the Caribbean online mmo. it was bland and the weapons where typical.
however something that "blew me out of the water" hehehe was the naval combat.
broadsiding, boarding, and looting on the open seas, the experience was invingorating!
unfortunatly the game was subscription based if you wanted good ships and the community was rather poor.
does anyone have a good non-rts naval game?

The only two I have ever played and liked was "Pirates of the Caribbean" on Xbox that was supposed to be "SeaDogs 2". Then, if you don't mind the idea of being a submarine, Silent Hunter: Wolves of the Pacific

Puzzle Pirates leaps to mind, it has ship based combat the Battle Navigation is turned based strategy...has all the things mentioned above (braodsides, boarding looting, aswell as plenty of others) Its a free MMO, definatly worth a shot.

Silent Hunter III, with the Grey Wolves mod installed is still the king of the naval combat genre. It's not as pretty as 4 or 5, but is still the far better game. The atmosphere and setting are perfectly captured in a way few other games ever come close to.

There's also a battleship mod available that lets you wreak havoc on the Allied convoys with a spot of commerce-raiding in a Pocket Battleship. Much fun to be had!

Try Treasure Planet battle for Procyon, even though it is a bit childish it as a surprisingly deep and addicting. Unfortunately the online capabilities were removed, but it is still easy to set up skirmishes with the A.I. or carry out objective based missions.

The three factions have their own unique strategies and specific weapons, you can create fleets and choose your crew for bonuses.

Here is some gameplay.

"Pirates of the Burning Sea" is similar to that I think, also being an MMORPG. I've played it but I haven't tried Pirates of the Caribbean Online so I can't really compare. Basically player is the captain of their own ship and it has this whole naval combat system with boarding gameplay and everything.

"Uncharted Waters" by KOEI (they do make more than Dynasty Warriors) is also in a similar vein. There's on foot combat when exploring but I don't think there's boarding gameplay. Like you can board, but it's just number crunching I think.

And if you're a little loose with your definition of naval combat then "Star Trek Online" which went F2P recently sort of applies. Similar concepts like maneuvering your ship to fire weapons or defend and what not exist. There's an added layer of strategy to it with the directional shields and hull with weapons that damage one or the other specifically.

And actually "Allods," despite people calling it a WoW clone, has a really interesting ship combat system. Rather than the typical raids and etc. the end game of Allods lets players purchase extremely expensive air ships, letting them explore floating island. They're really expensive so typically only guilds can afford it. In the end the ship is crewed by multiple players, with some controlling the movement, or manning cannons, navigating, etc. The idea is that you journey out into the ether and find uncharted floating islands for loot, the farther out they are the more valuable the treasure is, but the rewards aren't permanent until you make it back to port, so along the way other ships crewed by guilds of the opposite factions can attack and even board yours and steal your treasure. It's a very interesting system, on paper anyway, I've never gotten that far to experience it myself.

Oh yeah,
Sid Meier's pirates is fun if a little shallow.

Port Royale, if you want something a bit more in depth. You won't have an avatar to control but it has a bit more freedom to player actions. My favorite so far is the first one (Part 2 is pretty much the same game though but is worse IMO) However, Port Royale 3 is suppose to be a multi-platform release. It is suppose to come out this year sometime.

I would suggest the old "Fighting Steel". Not exactly pirates and stuff, but it's the best naval combat game ever made.

Nah, it's pretty accessible. They teach you everything you need to know to play the game, you just might not get the extra fan enjoyment from the little cameos and famous locations.

Battlefield 1942, Wake Island...

Heh, I really wish they didn't get rid of big ass boats in BF3. It was pretty cool driving a submarine or a destroyer around.
