A planet just like Earth...?

NASA's Kepler Telescope has found an exoplanet around a star 600 light years away with a mass twice that of Earth, orbiting directly in the middle of the star's Habitable Zone. The average surface temperature is 72 degrees Fahrenheit (22 Celsius) and is the best known planet so far discovered besides Earth to conceivably support life.
Quite a finding, if you ask me... We can no longer say that Earth is unique on its structure. And the best part is that it is not entirely impossible to get there, as we all know, technology advances faster than we can predict, on an exponential pattern.

Interesting, no...? I am looking forward to what is next.

Are you guys really hoping to find intelligent life on others planets, and if so to meet them?
So far human history is filled with chaos, violence and destruction and every time we find a new culture so they would probably try to either avoid us or destroy us no? Also the fact that we use oxygen for living doesnt mean that other life-forms have to use it too.

Yes, it's interesting. So was the article The Escapist did on it yesterday.

I try not to hope for things like intelligent life on these planets. I hope they are habitable, but uninhabited.
If it's a planet just like Earth, I have little hope that there's much intelligent life on it. But then, maybe we'll get lucky. XD

Initial response to thread title: ... probably exists.

Anyway, I can't say I'm surprised. With the wealth of celestial matter that exists, there are hundreds (if not higher orders of magnitude) of stars of each class and while they may not necessarily have a planetary system, a great many do, and considering how many there are, it was only a matter of time before we found one that got gradually closer and closer to being habitable (wrt humans, selfish dreamers that we are).

Still, we (as we are) probably wouldn't survive on that planet... the gravity would fuck us over...

It's a bit soon to call it Earth-like. We don't know anything about other than its size and temperature. There's a bit more that goes in to having an Earth-like planet than those two things.

Planing to move there? At half lightspeed we'll be there in oh... just over a millennium. Better start packing those bags.
