Pokemon are eaten. It is fact:

Farfetch'd a l'Orange
Magikarp fillets (though said to be very tough)
Slowpoke Tail (which grows back, so they farm them)
Taurus Steak (it is mentioned)

Those are just the few I remember off the top of my head. As for farming them? Pokemon gain strength by battling. If they don't battle, they'll never learn new moves, so it'd be quite easy.

The question about real animals being in the show is quite simple: the show is a poor representation of the manga/games. In those, Pokemon do completely replace animals. There are a few places where animals are seen in Season 1, but as the seasons progress they start to make less and less continuity mistakes.

I remember an episode of Pokemon where they tried to eat a Magikarp, but it evolved into garados and sent them flying with a hyper beam. This was early pokemon series back when they played that the pokerap after every episode.

Edit: Found the clip with them thinking about Pokefood.

Any loophole in the pokemon series can be easily attributed to this:

I know in one of the early episode when they're in a hotel or something a fishtank with normal fish is shown. Perhaps there are also other normal animals.

But there was also one episode where the gang goes to a Tauros farm (I think that's the one where Ash races a Ponyta and it evolves during the race), and I believe those Tauros were raised for food like cattle.

Also there's the St. Anne episode (or shortly after) where Team Rocket are floating on a raft with only the Magikarp James got scammed into buying, and they try to eat it but fail. Then it gets kicked into the ocean in a rage ("It's not even good for eating!"), evolves into Gyarados, and Dragon Rages them into blasting off.

I always thought it was possible for Pokemon to die (hence the Pokemon Tower graveyard in Lavender Town), and that fainting in battle was the equivalent of a knock out. Painful, sure, but definitely not fatal, which would explain why fainted Pokemon can still use HM abilities outside of battle.

Given that, they probably slaughter Miltanks or Tauros for beef. We've already seen that they keep Miltanks penned up in farms for the purpose of selling their milk. It's not that much of a stretch to assume they also slaughter them.

Maybe...just maybe this pokemon world only exist in Asia and they import the materials and ingredients from other countries and nations to make the hotdogs and hamburgers oooorrrr if you really want to get into it maybe it is all just a dream by a crazy asian man who finds way too much time on his hands to recreate every single game he has ever put out....i mean that would explain why i have never seen a character go to the bathroom...just saying *wistle wistle*

No one is intrested in ye olde animals in Pokémon.

So I ask you, members of the Escapist who are Poke-fans or not, how the hell do YOU think they come about getting hot dogs and hamburgers!?
If you start asking these kind of questions, then you're going to start asking more about the economics, evolution, morals, laws of physics and what-not. When you start trying to answer to all of these questions, you'll notice that Pokéworld should have fallen to postapocalyptic era long long time ago.

ALIENS DID IT!

You don't see anyone questioning how you can get shot and healing the wound/bloodloss/infection with healt kit or waiting and sucking your thumb, do you?

OT:It's quite disturbing to imagine a farmer going around and putting his Miltanks in the slaughter house
