Oh you mean like those people that if I say "Halo has a bad story" they threaten to hunt me down, gut me, and then burn my remains?
Pretty much that.

Or on the opposite side of the spectrum, my Halo example; I bought Reach only to have a guy in the store laugh and tell me I should learn to play "real games". I just walked out with my purchase and a confused look on my face.

To me, they're just asshats because the world any everything in it isn't to their expectations. Fanboys aren't quite the same but shit me also, like Halo fanboys:
"Z0MG ITS SO AW3S0M3 AND BESTEST AND FIRST FPS GAEM EVAR!"

One, there are plenty other FPS games out there that are probably better.
Two, Goldeneye was the real game to set a standard for FPS games.

Most of those people are just attention whores. To them, negative attention is just as good as positive attention.

IDK . . . too me, it kinda sounds more like you're describing an over-inflated ego. That can come along quick with intellectuals, and most of the "hard core" nerds you describe would more than likely be of said capabilities. Because of that, you end up believing you're above everyone else simply because you're on a much higher intellectual playing field, and having in-depth discussions with those of lower intellect can frustrate, bore and berate you cause the other person can't keep up with the discussion . . .

Been there, done all that . . .

It reminds me very much of a group of friends I used to hang out with during my high school days . . . and what you described is how we looked at the "outside" world. Unless someone could "prove" they understood where we were coming from - it wasn't worth our time to even bother speaking to them.

Thankfully, after getting out of HS I broke out of such social attitudes and have become a lot more open and accepting of others . . .

. . . but damn if that ego thing ain't hard to give up, lol.

I agree with you but honestly sometimes I just like to take a shit on things. I don't hate Lady Gaga (in fact she's alright and I actually like her weird style. Most of the time), but sometimes it's fun to ***** about certain things about her. (she's been picked on here and I've joined in)

And I might fit in to what you say because I get told I'm a downer sometimes and that I don't like anything. But honestly I think they're just not listening when I talk about things I love. For example, I was out with my friends and I just saw Furi Kuri and was gushing about it, I really fucking like it, and they were just like 'yeah whatever'. But if they ask about Iron man 2 a few minutes later and I say that I didn't like it they'll say I hate everything. And no it's not because furi kuris a Japanese cartoon and Iron man was a summer blockbuster because I can go to like minded movies like Red and really like that, it's that I liked one thing, and didn't like the other. (also not because it was something they brought up because I like a lot of stuff they reccomend, with one exception, their favourite anime fairy tail which I've tried to like a few times and I openly admit that about half of my problem with it is completely superficial and that I'm wrong).
Also I try to get people to see what I like and have them like it too (I've had multiple nights where I bring over a cavalcade of movies/games/ect. that I want to watch/play/whatever and they're just like screw it let's watch zombieland again (Not that I don't like zombieland, I like zombieland it's just that that's the movie we often turn to.((except this one time we looked around and found the movie quills and laughed our asses off at the crazy French sonnavabitch)))
Though if someone was to dislike something simply for being mainstream than that's not okay.
And as far as the whole you have to be a true or hardcore nerd, I couldn't imagine a lot of people doing that, but I was the kind of person who watched Full metal alchemist at volume level one so nobody knew I was watching a Japanese cartoon. Anyways, I guess my point is that I don't think people who get labeled an elitist is necissarily an elitist, and that the person doesn't have to fit into what you have described.
I hope that made sense/fit into what you want to hear.

First off, elitism is good because it puts the exceptional together so that they can mutually excel, and gives others something to drive toward. But what you're describing as elitist nerds isn't really elitism, it's just people being assholes. Asshole nerds aren't the same as elitist nerds.
It might just as well be.

Elitist nerds have the ability to be galactic assholes. Elitist gamers too, primarily because they WILL NOT TOLERATE that someone else (for example me) plays pretty much all games very casually and therefore don't know all the best ways to spec my character or insta-knife enemies from across the galaxy.

A StarWars nerd will DESTROY you if you don't agree with him which movies/games were good/bad. I actually enjoyed movie 2 in the series quite a lot (and not the one that got made second, but the nr 2 one, the one that was made uuuuuuh fifth). If someone that's a bit elitist on the subject disagrees, I will never hear the end of it, not until i ram my shoe up his mouth and throw him out.

I don't like elitist anythings. They are annoying. I want to kick them in the face for talking down on what I like and how I play, and its unfortunate that it's not possible to do so over the internet yet. Soon tho... Soon...

I'd rather sit in a room with a Justin Beiber fan who looks like Miley Cirus holding a hand bag with Lady GaGa's face on it than listen to an elitist nerd.

Now that I have you hooked, let me continue.

What is a nerd? By definition, a nerd is one who avidly pursues intellectual activities.

Now obviously the definition of nerd has changed over the years. Today, anyone and everyone can be a nerd. My dad stayed up all night playing Wii bowling just so he could score 300 points. What did I say to him when I heard him brag about his bowling score? "Dad, you're such a nerd!"

You can easily say anyone is a nerd nowadays.
What about the popular pretty boy in your school? Well most likely he does something you'd consider nerdy. Maybe he can work photoshop in ways you can't imagine, maybe he stays up all night doing speed runs on Mario Bros. Unless you get to know these people, you'll never know if they're a closet nerd or an open nerd.

Now, what's an elitist nerd?
An elitist nerd is one who has a "holier than thou" attitude towards almost everything. This nerd is the one you can't take to the movies because "mainstream stuff is shit", this is the person who thinks they're unpopular because they were "too busy studying/working" to care about that stuff, this is the person who hates any game that becomes popular because it's "not hardcore enough anymore".
In short, the elitist nerd is one who hates anything popular and most likely not popular in school because they didn't try to assert themselves

I hate to be buzzkillington, but hating everything doesn't make you cool, it kind of makes you a douche. I've been running into these people more and more and I want to punch them in the face. Especially when they ruin movies for me because they keep huffing and puffing during the whole damn thing. >_>

(I'm talking to you dickhole in Harry Potter who said the movie wasn't smart enough and you kept sighing loudly in my ear. If you didn't want to see the movie, DON'T go see it.

And this goes out to you too guy who laughed at me for purchasing Halo:Reach and saying "You need to learn how to play real games".)

Any questions, comments, concerns?
I dunno. I think your talking more about assholes. And believe me there are plenty of dim witted assholes everywhere. So the fact that you find assholes that are nerds is not surprising. Specially since the internet can breed some hateful and ignorant asshole nerds.

I would consider myself and old school jack of all nerds kinda nerd. I dabble in all things nerd, and I know some stuff that other people don't. But I don't ever belittle people for their opinions or thoughts, or get into nonsensical arguments with people.

I also think its a problem that its the "cool" thing to do these days with teens. Forgive me for generalizing here, but a lot of them are haters and snobs because I guess that's in right now.

O well, As my momma always said "Don't go near or step in dog shit, or you will start smelling like it".

I remember reading an article written by a fantasy author discussing the importance of doing world building before you begin writing. One of the things she mentioned is how she tends to be very meticulous about her world building and she still gets emails, etc. from fans criticizing some small, basically insignificant error. She said about it (and I'm paraphrasing here) "no matter how careful you are to avoid errors in your world/characters/story/etc. there is always going to be some small error that some people are inevitably going to notice and beat about the head for". Sounds like the kind of person you're talking about and yeah, they're fucking annoying. It's just a god damned story, stop over-analyzing everything and just enjoy it, it's not like there's some giant, glaring plot hole that destroys all credibility of the entire story. Who the fuck cares if Han shot first? He still killed Greedo and lived regardless.

I find it hilariously ironic that you start your paragraph about how modern popstar suck and/or are ugly and then complain about how its pretentious nerds are a problem because they hate something.

Yeah, it seems like you're more describing hipsters, initially, that is.

But I say where you're going with this. You're talking with someone who loves the Lord of the Rings books and they slap your shit for thinking the movies were good. Or the folks that scoff at your casual fondness for Star Trek or Star Wars or FPS games or any number of other things. They put themselves into a position of unwarranted authority over the genre or franchise they obsess over while mocking or insulting those who have a casual handle of those things. I've met some, but I only talked with them briefly once I realized they were this type. You can smell the arrogance coming off of them. It is irritating, to say the least.

Or even worse are the ones who complain about very debatable things such; complaining about story, depth, immersion and other nonsense in games.
Wait, why is that nonsense? Sure, gameplay is first and foremost, but if there's no depth in a game or if it fails at immersion, how do you have fun with the entire package? Like MW2; I didn't feel any immersion. It failed to really pull me in, so I became bored with it, even if the gameplay was solid. Does that make me an idiot, as you so put it?

The Rockerfly said:
You can ***** and moan that it is stupid and you are an idiot but the fact is that it is a much more refined game, fast gameplay and no worrying about any other rubbish in games.
Well, this seems appropriate.

Nothing can excuse dick-headery, not even being born with a penis on your head excuses it.

-You've described an elitist, not just an elitist nerd. What you hate are not "elitist nerds" specifically, but elitists and elitism in general.

So do I.

(btw, I think most mainstream stuff is shit, but I'm not elitist. I don't think that people who DO listen to mainstream stuff are worse than I, I just find most mainstream stuff utterly boring. People have different tastes, and you have to respect others tastes, even if they don't respect yours)

First it's connotation, and if it is a definition it's the historical definition. Anyways yes your right they are quite annoying and constantly argue that everything is wrong but what can you do, prove them wrong? Good luck, cause I've tried and failed.

By the looks of these posts, it looks like I accidentally became a very successful troll oO
Then again, my elitism differs in the sense that it's used here. Come to think of it, LaVeyan Satanism is probably more capitalist, but whatever.

Sorry, OP, but what you are referring to are hipsters, they are the kind to only like the obscure and consider society to be sheep to the mainstream slaughter, and I agree that they are incredibly annoying.

Elitists do not care about what are popular or not, all they care about is that they are better than you. An example of an elitist nerd would be the leader of a raiding guild on WoW that only accepts players with the highest stats and follows orders to the syllable, and god forbid you get out of line. A more real-life example would be the Universities that only accept straight-A students from a wealthy family.

Bottom line is, annoying people are annoying.

No, the problem with modern warfare 2 is that the gameplay was terrible, they tried to stuff too much of it in and ended up fucking it up in hopes of making the same success Modern Warfare did.
I can prove you very wrong, saints row 2 and just cause 2. Both ridiculous games with glitches, stupid shit and a terrible immersion they are the most fun games I have ever played

Well, this seems appropriate.
Let me guess, you think these games that involve action packed gameplay is "stupid"? There is a difference between a bad game in general (like modern warfare 2) and a game that has bad depth but focuses on gameplay (e.g. Just Cause 2)

A problem with Elitist Nerds?
Elitist Nerds are a problem in themselves (taking into consideration the fact that they have their head lodged quite tightly up between their buttcheeks)
They ruin things for other people, that's all there is to it.
