I've just been shown this video on Facebook by a friend of mine and... I don't know what to say. What the hell? What did this kid do to deserve this? How can so many people be standing by and watching as this goes on? And are these just normal Chinese people, or has the Chinee government been breeding and releasing some kind of humanoid monster onto the streets? To any escapists who already know of this, what the hell happened here?

I've seen the video before, and I showed it to a Chinese friend who told me that he has seen it before and that the kid was caught stealing, apparently this is not the first time he was caught either. Hope that makes things clear.

It... explains what triggered the event. Frankly though, it doesn't explain how they could do this to such an extent. Someone said on Facebook said it looked like the kids fingers were broken. I didn't notice that in the video, and I'm not about to watch it again, but if thats true then this goes way, way beyond justifiable punishment, and if a culture can allow these things to happen as regularly as some other comments seem to suggest, then that culture has some serious issues. I know, the bystander effect, but seriously, someone could have done, or said something. Goddamn it.

I don't agree with it, I'm just trying to let you know what happened. However, you should look at a website called ChinaSmack.com to understand what Chinese people think because the site has translated video comments on subjects such as these. Apparently people are actually afraid to help in situations like this, because if you do, the Chinese law with punish you also because they hold you responsible for the kid (even if your not related to him). I wish I was making this up, but thats why you hear storys like the little girl being hit by a truck, because if anybody helped her, they would be charged the hospital bills, not the parents.

I couldn't watch the whole thing because it disgusted me... why would nobody intervene? You can recite that rule about people not helping when others are around all you like but that deserved to be stopped. Pull the kid out of there, dammit!

Again, cultural views vary widely across the globe. Who are you to say they're 'wrong'?

Why does that only apply when the scumbag in question is from another culture? "It's the norm in their culture" does not make it any more OK.

If you are in someone's country, you abide by their laws and respect their cultural expectations.

I fully expect to be treated differently if I stole something here in the UK as opposed to something in the Middle East.

Where do you think the term 'savages' originated from? People who were raised in a completely different social environment judging other cultures by their own messed up standards.

when ever a situation like this occurs, and somebody brings up "cultural differences/standards/values" I'm reminded of a quote by a man named Charles James Napier. When he outlawed the practice of Sati (burning widows) people stated cultural differences, and he replied:

"You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours."

So for me, moral relativism doesn't hold up.

I never agreed with it, but by their cultural standards, it's the correct way to deal with that situation.

If you want to go tell them you disagree with their methods, be my guest.

I wish I had the political power to do so, I would first help the Tibetan people, because right now China is treating Tibet like how Japan treated Korea in the early twentieth century (forcing them to give up their own language and culture, suffering by the invaders hand, the invading force claiming to be in the best interest of the native people). While I would be at it, I would free the Nobel peace prize winner/his family, and make sure nobody messed with Ai Weiwei.

Ah, of course, the Chinese government, those shining fucking beacons of humanity. They would be one of China's serious issues, wouldn't they? I don't know, its too late in the evening to do this. I'm sure I'll find myself dwelling on these issues though.

What about in cases when the issue is multinational (obviously this is not the case with the child), would you still agree that moral relativism should be applied? Hypothetically, what if it was Israeli culture to lie and steal land and it was Palestinian culture to have suicide bombers and use child shields? Would you then feel it was ok as long as it was part of a culture, or would you feel that you have the right to judge them and if possible, prevent the two parties from acting out their "culture"?
