can somebody explain to me why they do what they do?
pretty much all of their attacks (except the one on that internet security corporation that was a challenge) seem random.
The only thing that ties their attacks together is that they are all gaming related sites.

ok so they do it for the lulz but isn,t it funnier to hack a live TV show to rickroll people seems to be allot funnier then taking down gaming related sites.
Taking down innocent gaming related sites isn,t helping anyone.
Anything that Anonymous does is justified by their goal of a free unregulated internet.

Lulzsec hates gamers? Actually I heard Lulzsec hacked a department of FBI. Dont know if they are tied to gaming.

they have neither rhyme nor reason, they do what they do....

simply because they can.

or see: For the lulz.

does that answer your question? :p

They claim it's "for the lulz". Though I've also heard some people claim that they've tried to justify their actions by saying that they're doing it to demonstrate to various companies that their security is lax and needs to be improved; whether that's true or not I can not say.

they do what they do becasue they can, or rather, "for teh lolz" if you will. seems like a good reason untill they get cought because i highly duobt they are doing it just to point out flaws in security of large corperations with the penalties they could face if someone in one of those corporations gets alittle butt hurt over knowing that everything they have worked for could be comprimised by some computer nerds. though if it turns out that they have some ultirior motive for doing what they do, i simply haven't done enough research into them to know what it might be.

I've heard many, many hackers in the past operate under that justification, so it wouldn't surprise me if that was the case. But as you say, it's not certain.

In my mind they're an evolution of anonymous. Once people realised that successful decentralised hacking groups can form around ideals they figured "sure I could protect free speech, OR I could hack this website and have some fun". So yeah, for the lulz sums them up quite nicely and in my mind this could go one of two ways.

One is that decentralised hacking is the flavour of the month and it'll be gone once people get bored of it OR

The lulz hacking continues and escalates as internet security in general seems pretty bad relative to the offensive capabilities of groups like this. Eventually it gets to be enough of a problem that it becomes a primary focus of government spending and after a while we get a whole slew of security technologies being developed. Where there's a will (and thus cash) there is a way.

As far as I know they've been going some of this at random, as they have a hotline for luz that anyone can call if they have a problem with a website. And I wouldn't say they are completely anti-gaming either as they said they have 200,000+ user info from Bethseda but wouldn't release it because they like the game company and encouraged Bethseda to release Skyrim faster.

I'd post links backing this^ up but I'm feeling far too lazy right now. Google it or visit their twitter account. (if they are to be believed.)

Oh, and please stop making threads about lulzsec, people. We are trying to ignore them.

As everyone else as said: for fun. They get a kick out of it. I agree, for those hacked, it is not fun at all, and in fact, extremely annoying. Having said that, I don't hate Lulzsec the same way I hate.... oh say, Mexican Drug Lords. Lulzsec makes life a bit annoying and they are very obnoxious, but truth be told, they aren't super villains bringing down the world. They target a few sites from time to time and they cause a fuss - but so far, other than a bit of downtime, they haven't actually caused that much trouble for regular internet users. For sites that depend on traffic, however, even a few hours of downtime results in a big dip in revenue.

Lulzsec are playing a dangerous game and I hope, for their sake, that they stop, and stop quickly. They aren't invincible, as they might like to believe.

My understanding is that they're basically trolls, except that they can do some serious real world damage if they want to.

Lulzsec are like your little brother typing rude words into your University essay when you aren't there. You ignore it, then find it, then get annoyed...then just laugh.
