My parents tried, but it got to the point where I figured they were being overprotective.
"Oh, this game is rated M so you shouldn't play it."
"I'm 19!"

At least they understood what the rating system was for. They mostly gave up, and I'm smart enough to not play gory games in their presence (Bioshock, Ninja Gaiden)

Incorrect! That's only if you fail to escape a trap, most likely. Other than that, it seems like it'll play out similarly to a Silent Hill game.

On topic: My parents don't care. Sometimes they'll jokingly act surprised when I ask for an M rated game, like BioShock or Oblivion, but they aren't concerned about what I play. Hell, they let my 12 year old sister play Oblivion. (Granted, it's essentially T rated, but they don't know the specifics.)

Well, not anymore, really. However, I'm 16 and so, still need their permission when buying an M-rated game, and since I'm quite embarrassed to have my mom and dad listen to the clerks list all of the "inappropriate content" in the games I buy, I'll just wait the 5 months.

Growing up, though, they were about as strict as with movies (as in, I could play Teen games about the same time I could watch PG-13 movies, etc.)

My Dad doesn't really care. My Mom doesn't let me get a lot of M-rated games. I got around that for oblivion because I explained the mod and re-rating thing. ;)

Before I bother reading the first post if your child is retarded enough to got shoot up a campus then they sould get a bullet in their brain. ITS NOT THE GAMES! Its a coinsidence. Yeah if somebody goes kill happy then of course the police will look into and when they cant find a good reason they blame doom or some bull. BULL FUCKING SHIT! You hardly even kill people in doom. Hell I have been playing games myself since I was 4. And not just ridge racer and shit like red faction. I am now 15 and have never had the urge to kill somebody. Sure I want to kick some prick ass now and then that is NORMAL! I play games when ever I am not at school or mowing the lawn, hell I would say I spend about 25 hours a buisness week playing saints row 2 and rainbow six vegas 2, etc. NOT TRUE.

Well, I think I could get away with gratuitous gore, like a sea of viscera, but no nudity or anything.

If I have a kid later in life, (I'm 15, by the way) I would definitely introduce him to the classics of Call of Duty 4 and Halo 3.

I just realized that today's games will eventually be considered old-school, and the old-school of today will be like ancient-preschool.
same, I'd never get away with nudity either.

you can just picture saying to any kids you might have: "sit down , now this archaic device is what we back in 2008 used to call a PS3, and if you look next to it there's an even older machine called the PS2 now when I was a lad..." (que child slowly falling to sleep from boredom)

Meh. Not really. They do mind with the sex and everything, though. Language, Blood and gore have no effect on my parents.

True. Columbine was NOT caused by Doom, just society being cruel, like always.

When I was 13 my mum started reading news about children who play to many games being more violent then kids who didn't.
So she would every so often ban us from using the computer, the tv and the Xbox/PS2. What really made this very annoying was she only did it when we had friends round, and (just to take the icing off the cake) would turn the the device off at the plug if we turned anything on.

My parents never did, but I'm no homicidal maniac. They still did their job of being a parent while not preventing me from playing RE4.

My parents don't care what play based on what they claim is a maturity level on my part. Honestly, I don't really see that whenever I play D&D, but when I play games like GTA 4, my parents know that I won't go imitating any of it. Not scarred, not violent.

I can play whatever I want, my parents don't mind as long as I maintain a life out of the computer and PS3 (I'm 16 by the way).

Fair point, yet in todays media it is far less violent from other products on the market, hence why many gamers would agree with my question "how is halo violent?"
There is a distinction between 'less violent' and 'not violent.' The idea is saavy about what you're playing. I am not insinuating there's a problem with playing Halo, far from it. Not at all. The problem is when one ceases to recognize that the activities depicted are not, in fact, violent activities. Understanding the media is key.

Now, i am assuming you don't have a degree in psychology, where did that far out claim come from? I, and many other users, know it is a game. We do not run about screaming for ammo, so why assume we would do - Too right it is anti-social!
I do not disagree with this either. -I- play violent videogames, and I -know- violence outside that context is heavily anti-social. I have the context of knowing where the stand between entertainment and reality stands. The problem is when that line blurs for certain people.

I'm not insinuating either that video games have made them this way. I'm of the opinion that those people already -have- problems, and such could be recognized during childhood or adolescence. I feel that such individuals who cannot make such distinctions should be treated accordingly, should -not- be playing video games that trigger them, and should be parented so that they can grow up in a manner that they do not -have- this form of autism.

The problem here is people like you who have not realised that playing this genre of game will not give us a "problem". The problem here is people like you looking down and thinking people are incapable of social understanding!
Not at all. I think the problem lies from people who lack social understanding coming into contact with 'violent' media, rather than 'violent' media making them lack social understanding.

The solution is not to dissolve violent media, but for parents to -do their job- in parenting these problem children.

I also believe that sheltering children from the harder realities of the world is not the way to go either. I believe that children should be allowed to make mistakes, explore, and occasionally get hurt. That's how a kid learns.

Again, I believe in -parenting- as the solution to the problems, rather than blaming media, be they video games or otherwise. I'm not into censorship, far from it. I believe that responsibility should be in the hands of people, otherwise artistic and political freedom becomes jeopardized.

I'm 15, and since I was 13, they've pretty much trusted me with that violent games don't scare, traumatize, or affect me. So it's all cool.

My parents are OK with gore plentiful enough to fill several swimming pools, but they are very strict on anything with sexual content.

My parents really don't care as long as it doesn't have any sexual stuff in it. Besides that I'm pretty much on my own.

My mom wouldn't buy me games that where violent when I was young. Then again I never really wanted any. Around 12-13 I started playing violent games, my mom was pissy at first, but she saw that they didn't bother me the way it does nutjobs and those idiotic kids.

Well, it used to be extremely strict. Like, I had to explain and beg for months before they would even let me get Resident Evil 4. Now, they don't really care. As long as there isn't an insane amount of swearing (I have a little sister), I can play just about whatever.

My daughter has always played games with me. She just turned 13 this year and has really started to make the hobby her own. It may be that I've let her step up to some of the more grown up type games like Fallout3 and such. I've always given her the lecture about games as make-believe and the difference of pretend violence to real violence. She gets it. Just like I did when I was younger.
