I am trying to learn Finnish, but have I really can't find any "How to Lean Finnish" books here in America. I'm going to order a few off the internet to get started, but does anyone have some other ideas how to get started while I wait for the books to come in?

Actually, there isn't one. But there IS a facebook group dedicated to joining together and making Rosetta Stone hear their voice! Because, you know, facebook groups like that work all the time...

I eventually want to move to Finland when I get out of college. The Finnish people seem proud of their roots, which I can really respect. I know there are people like that in all countries, but there's just something about FInland...

Haha, thats nice. But before you move here, i think you should come here on a holiday for couple weeks and see if you like Winland. That whole thing about 6 months of snow and cold on winter might not be what you want.

Indeed. I live in Texas where we have notorious 110 degree F days. I despise them. Saw a band from FInland called Turisas the other day and they heard talk about how warm it was here. Yet, we get a cold front and the temp drops to about 12 degrees F. Poor guys.

But yes, I plan on taking a 2 week vacation there sometime when I get the funds. Already started saving!

Well, there's a link for you (and from a real Finn!). It's not a beautifully finished site, but you'll learn the basics by clicking the links on the left.

I might also warn you that most of the finns in southern Finland (the ones in Helsinki in particular) are rather annoying. If you're planning on moving to Finland I would recommend Lapland, North Karelia or Ostrobothnia. The dialect may be harder to understand at first, but the people are much nicer.

There's no rush to learn Finnish as just about every finn can speak English. At least we should be able to with all the (free[yay!]) education we get...

Long story short, Welcome to Finland and have a nice time.

May I ask why Finland apart from the respect etc.?

I wouldn't mind learning it either actually. All I know about Finland is that it's cold and loads of really good death and folk metal bands come from there.

How about Nokia and Angry Birds? Not to forget Max Payne and Alan Wake!

Sadly though, not everything from Finland is as cool as Max Payne..
