Campness and Homosexuality are two completely diffrent spectra.

On the one end of the scale we have Michael McIntyre (British Comedian, straight with children but the campest man you could possibly meet. And admits to being so and turns butch around camp gay people so that they don't think he's treading on their turf)

On the other we have your friend.

Then there are the stereotypes of both camp gays and butch straights and the entire spectrum between.

The problem is when you have people who think that camp and gay are linked. Naturally, they'd prefer to be camp and gay but in hiding one they choose to hide the other as well. So when they come out as one, they come out as the other as well. If that makes sense.

Personally, 100% Gay, 75% Butch. I'll never skip except as a joke, say the word 'dahlink' except when taking the mickey, GTA, shooters, and RTS's are my genres of choice and trust me, if you tried to fight me you'd f***ing lose. But I'm also a half decent cook and my specialty is baking so I can't call my self 100% Not-camp.

I'll let Megan answer that [http://rosalarian.com/yume/?p=1383] because she probably said it better than I would.

To be fair I'm straight and act occasionally feminine.

In the past male of females could be masculine or feminine, only more recently it's become a constraint on one's personality

My cousin is gay, he was "cliche gay" since he was able to speak, very effeminate and very "flaming" in the way he speaks. He dresses up and when he came out, I and my other cousins were far from surprised.

I never understood that ...I dunno what to call how they speak but it's quite common from what I've seen. I'm not sure why they do it and I don't really care, it's just a thing they do, never phased me or made me want to awkwardly ask one of the gay people I know why they talk like that.

I personally don't care how someone acts/talks (unless it's like a moron) but I do get what you're asking in the OP. Then again I'm asexual, I'm very straight "acting" and I've turned down several girls and eventually had to tell my friends, no I'm not Gay just the middle ground of nothing works for me. Except Sega Genesis, oh-lala~. (JK)

Edit: After reading this I think I came across too straight forward, I have nothing against gay people, I actually hope they get more rights and such because I don't believe it's anyones business who does what with their bodies, as long as you know it's okay with their partner (if you get what I mean). So let 'em marry ya daft bastards! :|

Which makes me wonder if it's just a ploy for attention or whether they bottle such actions up due to fear of judgement?

Not trying to be offensive to anyone, I obviously have no problem with gays by virtue of the fact that I befriend them. I'm just trying to figure out this oddity.
Your misunderstanding comes from the fact that you believe that all gay men must have one personality trait because they are gay. Either they all act "flamboyant", and some merely hide it, or none of them are "flamboyant", and some act that way because they want attention.

Neither of those are correct. Some gay men feel flamboyant is natural for them, some do not. Just as there are some straight men who act, and I use this loosely, "gay", and yet like to have sex with women. Expand your view on things a bit, gay people run the full gamut on behavior, just like everyone else ;)

Pretty much what I was going to say, but put far more eloquently.

Also, welcome to the Escapist

No worries I get that a lot, at the risk of slight derailing things (if just for the briefest moment) I feel I should say

"Golden Sun DS!"

My gay friend once said something to me on this subject that I thought kind of applies.

We were walking down the street and we saw someone dressed in full leather, dog collars, chains, etc, basically looking like he was on his was way to be a submissive in a dominatrix porno.

But he was just walking down the street flaunting it like it was a normal thing.

I just wondered why at first glance, and my friend said that people advertise what they are looking for.

I thought it made sense.
I wear my Tool sweatshirts or Comic book nerdy clothes out all the time, because it sparks conversations with like minded people, and let's people know my basic personality and interests at first glance.

I guess what I learned is most people judge a book by it's cover, so by being a "flamer" (sorry mean no offense), it pretty much let's people know with a big neon sign that you are gay.

I'm not saying this is the case for everyone but I thought it makes sense.

I don't think it's an act, however.
Want to talk about Tool sweatshirts?

This is pretty much my view on the issue. I love how people overanalyze the "flaming" homosexual like it's a big deal. It's no different from people who have green mohawks to let everyone from a mile away know that they like punk music. There's a gay culture, like a punk culture, and some people are more into it than others and they express that in their dress and mannerisms. Simple.

Ahh you said what I was trying to say much more succinctly and clearer. Thanks.
You're absolutely right, some people just take advertising their personality to the nth degree.

They want to make people know, to attract other people with the same interests. Like I do with my band t-shirts and platform boots. Also, it could be that they were that all the time, but the restraints in society kept them from being effeminate. Do you ever see a straight guy being that way? It's probably because there's some social rule that gays are allowed to be that way, cause you don't see anyone making a big deal of it, but when a straight guy does it, he's a clear bullying target.
