A question for non British people

I've heard of her before. I've always had a good opinion of her, as she seems to have helped restore Britian's economy somewhat.
And I'm not a big fan of either trade unions or rampant socialism so ++ there as well. But probably the biggest thing that I like was the large role she played, along with Reagan, in ending the Cold War, the Soviet Union really needed to go.

English here. Thatcher was one of the last great idealists able to defeat those who threatened the balance of power without compromise. Powerful rulers are needed to control the people. Although she had some shortcomings, I believe her to be one of the great British Prime Ministers. Not like the pragmatists today who would bend their policies for the sole purpose of being elected or remaining in power.

I'm actually quite shocked by all of the generalisation going on in this thread. Apparently she made everyone's life in the UK miserable and now we all hate her. I have a fair few pro-Conservative friends. I'm actually surprised Lord Cuthberton isn't here...

Although from reading other people's posts I sure as hell would never want to be a world leader. Fucking hell, I couldn't handle being slammed and hated on for doing what I thought was best for the people, by those very people.

As a political Science and Economics student we basically refer to Thatcher as the person who ended the British Welfare state. Would you say that is an accurate statement?

Sorry, what? Do we have the same definition of 'welfare state'? Because she most certainly did not end it. Unemployment was soaring during her premiership there are pictures from the '80s of dole ques stretching into the street. She created it if nothing else.
Those that praise Thatcher are 97% rich, upper class fools with no understanding of politics. She crippled Britain's industry to the point where we no longer produce any of the famous 'British' brands. If this hag is given a state funeral, there will be protests.

A democracy does not involve a government controlling the people, far from it. A good leader listens to the people, works with them, makes compromises if necessary. In fascist Italy, she'd have been fantastic. Pay a visit to any former mining town anywhere in the North, Scotland or Wales, look at the desolation she has caused and then come and say she was a great PM

How on earth could the falklands war be avoided?

Keeping HMS Endurance on station, probably reinforcing her with some of the ships and aircraft that were eventually sent there eventually.

That might have worked, rather than taking away the only major British naval prescence in the area.

Also I wish people would stop pissing and moaning about the fucking Belgrano...the fucking argentinian navy and there govt have both held their hands up and said "yeah fairplay we knew the risks and we got caught out"

The 200 Nm exclusion zone was for non-beligerant shipping not fucking enemy warships on operations.

if we wanted Im pretty sure we could have sailed HMS Conqueror up to whatever fleet base the Argentinian navy used and just picked off Argy (navy) ships till they ran out of torpedos or got sunk and no one would have said boo til someone signed a ceasefire.

Im still waiting to hear some actual evidence on this theory of the Royal navy sinking an Argentinian civilian vessel prior to the invasion of the Falklands.


also,I think Thatcher was a ***** who did some really heavy damage to this nations economy and heavy industry whilst really fucking up its notion of community/society. Her primary concern in power seemed to have been benefiting the few at the expense of the many.

American here, and thanks to an upstanding british friend of mine I heard of her as a Maggie Thatcher joke. I was completely lost and he refered me to the Wiki. Tyrannical, yes. Supporting bad policies? Certainly... Starting the Falklands War? Don't think that one could have been avoided.

That said I am American and doubtless don't have all the juicy facts.

As an american, Thatcher was given approxamitely two sentences (Half of what was given to the War for Toledo. Total casualties of that, 1 Ohioan pig.) in my history textbook. I also read an article about her in Newsweek, though I don't know how many people read Newsweek.

I know you said non brits, but I'm sticking my two cents in anyhoos.

Judging by the escapists rough demographic of people under 30, many of them will either have been young children or not even born when Thatcher was in power, and thanks to a lack of useful interents, probably wouldn't have known about her. I don't know much about US presidents of that time. As far as I'm aware it went Regan and then Bush Sr. Nixon might be in there somewhere...

Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush Sr., Clinton, Bush Jr. (aka dimwit), then Obama...but close enough. OT I've only heard Thatcher's name heard in reference to the fact that she was a prime minister. You knowing two president's is more than we Americans would normally know about PM's
