Do you need to install games before playing? Or are there some games you can play without installing while others you can't?

Only a Wii U owner here, but I'll say what I know...

Every game I've heard of needs to be installed. With sizes of today's games, the optical drives just can't pull the data off of the discs fast enough to hide load times (or make them somewhat pleasant). I believe every game fully installs, so the disc, should you use one, is just there to verify you haven't sold, traded, or loaned the game you are currently playing.

I think the PS4 has the nifty feature to install a game and allow you to start playing after a certain part is loaded to the HDD. It doesn't matter if you do it with a physical disc or download it from PSN.

If you are looking to buy an xbone or PS4, it might be a good idea to get one with the larger hard drive. The 500 GB drives can only hold maybe 10 games (counting the OS taking up 100-200GB). Don't forget the patches that are now routinely over a GB in size. If you don't replay many games or don't mind the occasional reinstall, 500 GB might be fine.

Yes you do for every game to the best of my knowledge. Many games allow you to start playing when only a small part is installed (seems to take about ten to fifteen to fully install but you can usually play within five while it still installs).

If size of hard drive is your wonder, this is my system's breakdown right now...

Madden 16 (digital download): 20.1 GB
Dragon Age Inquisition (digital download): 45.8 GB
Battlefield Hardline (digital download): 46.6 GB
Shadow of Mordor (disc): 36.2 GB
Blood Bowl II (disc): 5.9 GB

Unfortunately I only have the two disc games but to my knowledge, it doesn't install all of it to the Xbox One (I'm not sure why Shadow is so freaking big, it is Game of the Year edition so maybe the DLC downloaded and the rest was on the disc?).

Some require installs, some don't.
Disgaea 5 I can confirm doesn't need an install, but I believe some others do.
I pretty much 100% go with digital so I can't say much for recent games, but I'm pretty such MGS ground zeros required an install.

PS4 installs have been very quick in my experience, and you can start playing at least most games before the install is finished anyway.

PS4 (and PC) owner here. Most games Ive purchased or borrowed needed to install onto the hard drive. Some install times are bloody stupid requiring more then a day (I dont have the best internet its just a DSL set up since no one will run cable out here). There have been a few that didnt require installation but I dont remember which ones off the top of my head. Even with long load times for my PC and PS4 I purchase almost everything digitally unless the store I work in sells it (and in that case I buy it there because employee discounts are awesome)
