That'd be a lot more funny if not for the "Black guys like KFC " thing.
So yea, fail joke on your part....
Oh for God's sake, I wasn't supposed to be ninja'd by someone non-ironically.

Because it annoys self-righteous people.

And - as alluded to above - possibly because I have a death wish, and it's a nice cowardly way to go about it.

I smoke from time to time with friends or colleagus on partys. It gives a small high if you dont develop a habit and I honestly enjoy smoking (especially when not just tobacco is involved).
There was a time when I was developing a habit but i dropped that pretty shortly after and went back to my normal behavior.
Treat tobacco in the same way as say alcohol and it's cool.

I don't smoke tobacco myself (except for when I'm drunk, but then, who doesn't?), but a few of my friends do. They seem to like the flavour, the act of smoking and to little times out. People do all kids of random shit that's harmful to themselves, it's up to them and I don't see why they shouldn't be allowed to do it if they want to. Hell, if I wasn't poor for the majority of my teens and I enjoyed the taste of tobacco, I'd be a smoker too.

Inb4 it relieves stress.

Smoking doesn't relieve stress, it relieves the withdrawal symptoms of not smoking.
That's a very strange way to phrase it.

Eating doesn't relieve hunger, it relieves the withdrawal symptoms of not eating.
Not eating is a withdrawal from something necessary to survival, not smoking is a withdrawal from something you have brought upon yourself, not nature. You can't possibly compare something essential to life and something that is not essential to life like that.

Trying for a badge, or is this a serious question? Go ask someone you know who smokes - they might give you as non-BS answer, if you're honestly curious.

I started the week before I tried to kill myself, some decade + back now, so please don't inundate me with reasons to live, I got it, and it was something to do other than cut myself up as I was getting over that. My parents and grandparents all smoke - 90% of my family smokes - as do the majority of my friends both then and now, so it really didn't make a big deal to me to join them. I do find they relieve stress in a similar way that one of the squeeze balls or a puzzle toy or something relieves stress - it's something to DO while you are freaking out, except it's quiet and you can remove yourself from whatever situation to go do it if you really want to. Saying "I'm going to go have a smoke" after you get off a horrible customer service call with some prick that made you want to cry over something entirely not your fault is a GREAT way not to cry in front of your coworkers, regardless of if you smoke or not while you're away. My fiancé smokes, if I quit he's pretty screwed into quitting because I will resent the hell out of it if he doesn't (and vice versa no doubt, so we'll probably quit together if we go for the kids thing).

As for health. I have no health care. I have horrible teeth (one is broken right now, for the last year, thanks). I never go to a doctor unless I'm on death's doorstep because I can't afford to, and yes, I know how much smoking costs me but it's a small daily thoughtless cost vs. a one time omg I need to wait for my next paycheck to eat cost and that does things to your head. As far as health goes, I know I'm screwed already - I eat crappy food because it's cheap, I live in crappy places because they are cheap, I have a terrible sleep pattern because I work ridiculous hours as do those around me, and on and on - so it's a little pointless to me to say "well at least I'm avoiding ONE thing by not smoking!" when in fact, I'm not. My step-father's mother has half a lung left. She never smoked, nor did her husband, nor did her kids around her and yet: lung cancer for her. Why? No idea. My maternal grandmother has smoked since she was 11: cancer free. The world is not really a place we control by our habits, sorry to say.

Smoking tastes gross. Same way Scotch tastes gross. People some how keep drinking and smoking till you get used to it. An then addiction comes in and you need to smoke. Not smoke because you like it. Your body craves it.....not because you actually like it.

Anyway. Me, dont care if people smoke, as long as its not near me. Also, once you have kissed a woman that smokes, never again. Only think worse than that is kissing a smoker than has eaten mints.....thats even worse. Anyway, if you enjoy smoking then keep doing it, you shouldnt change that because of others. Just accept that people may not like your smoking habit - they may love you as a partner and a friend, just not your habit. :)

I will go with the time honoured answer that non-smokers refuse to accept: I enjoy it.
Do that many people really refuse to accept that answer? I am a non-smoker, aside from the very rare cigar. And that answer seems perfectly valid to me. It's the same reason I drink pop, eat junk food etc.

What do you enjoy about it? The smell? The smoke going into your lungs? That feeling of suffocation that makes you lightheaded?
I'm not sure what you're asking here. Are you accusing him of lying? Because unless every smoker I know is part of some sort of conspiracy, some people really do enjoy smoking!

Just because you don't enjoy something, doesn't mean that no one does. ;)

If you're smoking a pack a day or more, you're an addicted turd, but if you do it on occasion, then it's okay by me. I've never met someone who smokes a pack a day that is an upstanding human being. That's my judgement, get upset or not, it does not matter to me.

There is something quite odd about people who properly chain-smoke. As in, the moment one cigarette is done another one gets lit.

I remember a trip I went on at school where we had a really old bus driver driving us around Greece. I never saw him without a cigarette in his mouth. Not once. I think he was lighting them off each other. It would cost him a fortune in the UK with all the tax we have on cigarettes here!

I'm a non-smoker, but I would guess that they smoke for the same reason I drink. It's a way to relax and unwind.

Because... I like it. I really don't know what else to say. Sure, it's also to get away from people, relax, gather my thoughts, and all that good stuff, but even when I don't need to do any of those things, the simple fact is that I like it, health hazards be damned.

This is the attitude I've always run into with smoker friends. Up to and including the one who's funeral I attended this summer. You silly smokers and your living dangerously. You make me sick.

Okay now I'm off to have another double scotch.

Cheers.

Well there are 3 pages of this now so I think you have your answer. But I'll chip in my 2 cents for all their worth.

Because I like it. Same answer any other smoker will give you. It's like drinking, eating mcdonald's or driving really fast. All of these things are dangerous. We're told not to do them but we do them anyway because we like it, and if it's bad for you then that makes it even better. People logic bro.

You could masturbate, just as addicting, but less damaging to your health, heck it might be beneficial to some people, because it decreases blood pressure and lowers the chance of having heart diseases.

I honestly never smoked, and never will. The same reason i don't drink alcohol or do drugs.
It's because i'm a filthy hipster
Going to be honest, I thought you were going to write something idiotic and giving me a reason to hate you... In the typical Internet way, and then you end with that... And I laughed and because of that, I can't make myself do what I thought I would do...

And I've never smoked, for that simple reason that I'm simply too f#cking poor to buy cigs all the time. I've grown up with people smoking it and I've never really gotten the whole "Loving-It" feel from it, neither have I gotten the "Hating-it" thing either... I just don't want to smoke... I'm already addicted to sugar, masturbation and gaming... Why would I want to add another addiction?

I'm a fairly light smoker and I like the sensation but mostly I just like not doing anything for a couple minutes every few hours. Whether it's a break from work or even just surfing the net, it's nice to just sit outside and stare at the sky for a little while. I know you can do that without a cigarett but for one thing it seems a little silly and somehow it's just not the same.

Plus, I work in an aged care facility and while some people certainly seem to enjoy living on into their 90s and beyond, I really don't want that for myself. So I'm hoping I'll luck out and my filthy habit will take me right in the sweet spot between middle age and old age.

My dad smoked for almost forty years, then one summer he decided it was too expensive and stopped, he hasn't smoked in over a year now. Should tell you just how stubborn that old man is.

yeah sure its bad for your health but so are most things. you still see people stuffing there faces with saturated fat (be it cis or trans and no that has nothing to do with gender but the molecular structure). You still see people texting while they drive and you still see people buying heavy duty assault rifles in a supermarket

people spend to much time and money these days trying to extend their life or save the planet. Would you rather drive a hybrid, eat salad and be tee-total and live until your 120 or would you rather eat red meat, drive a fast car, drink heavily, smoke heavily and live till your 65

Giving other people terminal cancer, is the only legal way to kill them.

Seriously you know the government/society is fucked up when a drug that harms and even kills other people other than the user is legal, and yet all the drugs that only harm the user are illegal.
Shit guys, he's onto us! Quick, get the pipes. THE PIPES!

Seriously, nearly everything will give you cancer if the papers are to believed. And smoking, unlike smack, won't make me go on a mugging rampage or rob a house to afford more. This whole "Tobaco is as bad as other drugs" thing needs to stop, it trivialises just how horrifying Class A drugs are.

As for the "Passive smoke is eeeeeevil" thing, It's now illegal for us to smoke inside any enclosed space where there are people except for our homes, which is really the only way you could possibly get cancer from passive smoking alone.

So yeah, your'e argument sounds juvinile. We are not trying to kill you. We just like how awesome we look smoking. Or something

What about the millions of parents who smoke while pregnant/carrying their child/walking their child/non-fucking stop?
