There really is only one right answer to this question, and that is "Hell no!" Anything otherwise is evil. Not just wrong, not just sick, but evil. Even the idea of "I'll use the money to help people" excuse is just a rationalization. No one has the right to mark someone out for death for personal gain, even if it's at random. I sure as hell wouldn't want one of my family members (or hell, even me!) to just drop dead because some asshole decided that their personal gain was more important than human life. Hell, if someone I knew died as a result and I ever found the guy who pressed the button, I'd probably gut them myself.

In fact, let's change the question, just a bit. Same rewards, same complete lack of consequence, we'll even keep it to the same numbers. The only difference is that instead of pushing a button, you have to go out with a sniper rifle and randomly shoot five people in the head. You'll be disguised from head to toe, have your escape prearranged, and the courts, police, etc. will all be fixed to ensure that you never suffer any sort of consequences. Would you still do it then? Morally, it's the same thing, only without acting through a button to make yourself feel better.

Yeah I would probably click it. Hell Almost definitely the more I think about it. Since I could get anything I want from it, I would use it to improve the school systems, help re stabilize the economy. I would use it to find a cure for Cancer, AIDS and other horrible diseases, as well as fund scientific research and reestablish NASA, find a way to end world hunger and possibly even war. I could do all that while living an extremely comfortable life. That sounds really good. I know it sounds kinda terrible but 5 deaths to help improve all mankind sounds like a small price to pay.

Even if the button had a puppy glued to it, and to press the button you have to mash the puppy, I'd still do it.

Mind you, I am a dick.

Yep.
And after I become ridiculously rich and powerful, I shall become like a god and reshape the world in my image. Or at least bring world peace under a single unified state.

This sounds almost exactly like The Box except for the number of people...

So no, wouldn't push the button...but then if the logic holds true, I actually have no control over whether I push the button or not...or..something like that...

That movie still feels like three films and a sci fi sub-blot mashed together under the guise of a single film.

I wouldn't, because having myself a good life isn't what I aim for. I aim to be remembered for something that will help humanity as a whole. Sure, a good life is nice, but I'd prefer to earn £30,000 as an aerospace engineer than £150,000 as a CEO that does next to no work.
Trust me, CEO's do a fuckload of work. 48 week working years, going to bed past midnight then having to wake up at 5:00AM to work out because your company's value is dependant on your wellbeing. It's not as easy a lifestyle as the world makes it out to be. You are responsible for EVERYTHING.

YES! Every single one of my whims, for the rest of my life? For only 5 people? I would kill a hundred for that opportunity, dammit! 5 is nothing! NOTHING!

There are almost 7 billion people in the world. 5 people are gone because of me. Other than myself, nobody would know that I did it! These are people who I would never meet. Their deaths would not affect me at all, other than that I get anything I want in the future. This would be too good to be true!

EDIT: Wow, the people of the escapist are a lot nicer than me. Go figure. Not changing my answer, though.
Bullshit. Most people probably can't actually percieve that situation.

As for me, I'd press the button without second thoughts.

It's not because I'm cynical, it's not because I'm a monster, it's simply on one simple basis.

The ability to fix a lot of trouble and stress in my life, or a couple random people's lives that I will never know?

Considering that thousands of people die a day and feel sadness, and that little skirmishes have led to the deaths/splitting up of plenty of families... I don't really see the difference in five more lives lost. ESPECIALLY if it doesn't affect me.

I would press it, I do not care about the 5 people, and would gladly give their life for a more convenient life of mine.

I would not press the button. This is mainly because I am not going to be responsible for the deaths of 5 people, even if I don't know them. The second reason is that a life where every one of my whims is met would be a very boring one. I think you would find that all those joys would eventually become very hollow.

But I LIKE suffering and struggling for everything in life. I just get everything instantly? What's the fun in that? Where's the drama? Where's the conflict? Even if I did have an exciting and adventurous life as one of the world's richest men, I could never admit where I had gotten my riches. Then there's the taxes and lawsuits, mo money mo problems man. Then there's what to do with my obscene wealth when I die. Even if I do give it to some worthy cause, like making immortal cyborgs, creating warp technology, colonizing mars, or making lightsabers, it would take years of legal wrangling between my family to get there. Also, people would constantly asking me for money: asking to fund some crazy venture, fund an invention, bail out the U.S. government, or save some fortune 500 companies from bankruptcy. Then there's everyone else judging me, thinking i'm an asshole with all this undeserved wealth. Even if I donate 500 million dollars to bring peace to Sudan, people will ***** about how I didn't donate 500 billion dollars. No thanks man, I'll pass on your box o' plot holes.

Considering one of my whims is ending the need for war, ending hunger and generally making people happy and healthy enough to leave each other the fuck alone, yeah, I press the button. Erect a monument/memorial for the dead and mourn, then take care of everyone else.

Yeah...that's a tough one...
I'd press it.
People die every day, the population is too large, people get over death.
I guess that's pretty heart-less, but I would press it.
It wouldn't change my ambitions, goals, or morals. If I were to press it I would promise myself to keep living my life the way I have been. I would still want to become an engineer(what I'm studying to become).

Sooo yeah, pressed.

I'm one of those shallow, grim people who's target in life is not reachable by any means of any man, simply because free will of another exists.

I wouldn't press the button, in fact, I would most likely punch the offerer in the face.

Well, if my "every whim" can include an end to world hunger, or if I can use some of my newly obtained wealth to save lots of lives, then sure.
That's the catch isn't it, I would do it if that's on the list of 'whims'.

If not then sod it, my own selfish desires aren't worth 5 lives.
