Why is when ever anime characters see things that can be described as NSFW they get nose-bleeds?

I have been watching anime for years and I still have no clue whatsoever.

Because anime writers are incapable of showing that a character is aroused or uncomfortable but through extremely unsubtle visual cues.

It's a sudden rush of blood, and it normally happens to male characters. A rather simple connection.

I think it's mostly just become accepted by Japanese audiences and producers for a while now, so it's stayed.

I think the deal is that since you can't really show erections in most shows, they needed to find a replacement.

I guess they figured arousal could cause a rise in blood pressure high enough to pop an artery in the nose or something.

its a cultural thing, its probably similar to the old wives tales in the west about if you masturbate you will have hairy palms, essentially forcing shame upon you for desire

I think there's theoretically an actual physical connection, though it's indirect and doesn't often happen in real life.

I do think in a lot of areas anime would benefit from more subtlety. I've found this trope to be funnier for arousal;
