I have heard mixed things about this game, some good things some bad things. However, what many people seem to agree on is that if you have a decent understanding of warhammer 40k you will enjoy the game more. The thing is, I'm kinda a noob to the series, and I have some understanding of it but not a huge amount. Is there like a quiz or something that I can take? Can I get anyone's recomendation?

Whatever, just wash your hands.
I really enjoyed the game, single player was good, multi is allot of fun also, I know a decent amount about the universe, they really should have included codex about with more info on it, if you don't know anything about the universe you should still enjoy the game but knowing some about it certainly helps.

From what I understand, it's a good game, but not worth like, £40. If you've got the money, go for it man, either way I'm sure it's a great time.

If by quiz you mean demo, then yes.
I mean like a quiz to see if my knowledge of 40k lore is up to snuff, I mean I know what a Space Marine is, what a Tech Priest an Imperial Guard and an Inquistor is, but is that enough?

Feth is a curseword from the Guardsmen group the "Tanith First And Only" otherwize known as "Gaunt's Ghosts". Ya the Spacemarine game is fun so I'd recommend just skipping ahead to playing it but if you want book requests for a better understanding of the lore I could list a lot.

That should be fine. There are a few other smaller things you might not get, but its really just minor fan service. I thought the game overall was pretty fun on its own and had a surprisingly well told story, if a little similar to a few other stories set in the universe

If I'm going to read any of those, I'll probably start out with those about Gaunt and Cain, HERO OF THE IMPERIUM. From what I've heard it's a good place to start.

You could visit the Lexicanum (aka "Warhammer Wiki")

Well, that implies you need to know that Chaos Space Marines are former Space Marines corrupted by the demonic power lurking in the Eye of Terror, but otherwise I think you may be fine.

Also, knowing that UltraMarines are a Space Marine chapter, and not a type of Marine as the name may suggest.

Also, Orks...they're clumsy slightly stupid things...

The Ciaphas Cain Books are my favorites no question though if you are looking for info on everyone I would recommend starting with "Let The Galaxy Burn" its a collection of random short stories from the best authors in the series and it covers everything including the the vastly unknown secretive Assassitorium.

For what it's worth, I had a very limited knowledge of Warhammer going into Space Marine and I enjoyed it quite a bit. But I also like that style of gameplay so that helped as well.

It's a fun game. And the nicest thing is that the upgrades come at a good pace so while the combat is repetetive by it's very nature, there is usually something new to try pretty often.

I should also point out that I didn't actually finish the game yet. But not because I wasn't having fun with it. If memory serves, Gears 3 came out and I quit playing it to try that and haven't gone back yet because of Batman and Dead Rising and Forza4 and Saints Row and Skyrim and... you get the idea.

I enjoyed it. Granted I haven't played it since Skyrim came out, but I still had fun.

for this game, yes, knowing a bit about 'chaos' doesn't hurt but not really required.

all you really need to ask your self is this
1) dose brutalizing Orcs with a weaponized chainsaw and a semi/fully automatic GRENADE LAUNCHER sound like fun?

2) can i afford it?

For what it's worth, the Ciaphas Cain-books are totally awesome. Go read.

As for the things you should have a vague idea of:

The Imperium of Man - A rather dystopic future human empire spanning a sizeable chunk of the Milky Way. It's mostly shit. Aliens keep attacking and humans keep attacking aliens.

The Emperor - The God-Emperor of Mankind. He's kinda dead, so he doesn't do much, but people regard him as a God.

There Is Only War - The slogan of the 40K universe. As it says. It's supposed to be a "unrealistically" grim future.

Space Marines - Geneteically engineered human supersoldiers. Totally badass, but quite few. Warrior-monks, they are divided in different "chapters" (i.e. monastic warrior-orders) easily told apart by their different armour colours.

Ultramarines - The Chapter you, the player, Captain Titus, belongs to. Blue armour. Sticklers for rules, but still totally kick-ass in every way.

Orks - The name should give a clue. They are big, green, and enjoy nothing more than violence for the sake of violence. They are often depicted as somewhat more "comedic" than, say, the Orcs in the Lord of the Rings, but they are much more dangerous, easily outnumbering humanity and fighting with great ferocity (as long as they aren't busy bashing in each other's heads, which is, luckily, most of the time).

Chaos Space Marines - Space Marines who turned traitor and decided to follow the Chaos Gods, which are effectively four bad god-thingeys representing most evil gods ever. As badass as Space Marines, but with evil magics and mutations and demons and stuff. They are, unsurprisingly, rather evil. Becoming a Daemon is the greatest reward a Chaos Space Marine can get from his Dark Gods, as it grants immortality and otherwordly powers.

Guardsmen - Humans with mass-produced, low-quality guns and armour. Mostly useful as cannon fodder to keep the enemy busy until the Space Marines come along, although they have plenty of tanks and artillery.

Adeptus Mechanicus - The only humans allowed to produce technological items of any kind. Most of them are part-machine themselves. Rather narrow-minded. Based on Forge Worlds, enormous factory-worlds dedicated to production rather than habitation. The game takes place on one of these.

The Inquisition - Much like the Inquisition of the real world, the Inquisition is a human organisation who is completely paranoid about any and all signs of civil unrest, daemon worship, witch-craft, heresy etc. They are not above killing billions based on only vague suspicions. They are not very nice, but decently good at their job at least.

Reading what I've written here should about cover what you need to get a good game going. It's quite fun, both single-player and multi-player, and I'd say it's worth your time.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask, WH40K-fans are usually overly enthusiastic about sharing their hobby anyways ;)
