The sad part is abandonware sites and ROMs are going to be the only ways some titles will end up being preserved, several decades forward from now. I don't even want to think about games distributed on Steam that become unavailable in the future.

Kind of like Steam dropping XP support, while not doing anything to ensure the entire library will actually run on newer OSes (there are several XP-era games that don't run or don't run well on newer windows). GOG at least makes the effort to maintain usability of games on their platform.

I never understood why gaming forums ban people admitting to or advocate piracy. What's in it for the forums? It certainly does limit honest conversation.

General ass covering, I presume. In my country, movie and gaming studios can ask ISP to block you from using the Internet if you pirate. From some of the cases I've seen, this is the same in the US.

Let me say that again. A company can legally force another company from providing services to customers. Or, just lose that customer and associated money. A lot of ISP are big compared to a magazine and they can't fight back. And while their crimes might not be seen as big, the company with copyrights legally HAS to chase you down if you cross the line. It's not worth the risk.
