If I don't have high speed internet, but my neighbors have it, can I use the new wi-fi to use theirs (I've already asked their permission for this, just for my conscience's sake). What complicates this is the fact that I live in a cell phone dead zone (my tin roof, probably) and I think that might affect wi-fi.

Yes. As long as you can receive a WiFi signal, you can use the WiFi functionality of the new 360. However, from your comments, you might want to make sure that you actually can receive a signal, because it sounds like you can't.

If your computer can connect to Wi-Fi from the same spot as where you want to put your 360, then you shouldn't have any problems.

Damn...Another example of the rural gamer being screwed. I was hoping to finally try this whole "Xbox Live" thing that all the attention seems focused on now.

Cell phone dead zone is just placement of the towers, unlikely to be signal penetration.

How are you getting on the internet right now?
