The main story is pretty short, but that isn't the point.

In total out of the entirety Fallout 3 plus 3 DLCs I got 120 hours. And that's just my first play though.

Leave the main story alone. Think about it. The world is fucking huge. Have a look around. You never know what you might find.

the main quest felt kinda short, but if you do all the side quests (and you fight and explore a lot) then you're occupied a lot :p

I've played and beaten it twice, though I'm replaying it a third time gradually while hooked into XBL to get the achievements (PC version). I destroyed some of my older saved games with mods after one of the official patches really messed with them.

That said, as people mentioned the game is fairly short if you follow the main quest line. If you play through the side quests it can take 50 hours I'd say. If you decide to explore every nook and cranny of the wasteland your talking like 100+ hours even with one of the giant strategy guides. I still find new things every time I play.

Sadly there won't be any transfers/perks based on your accomplishements in the first game since that would be cool (even if it's a totally differant storyline and whatever, I like it when game series acknowlege playing other parts of the series and give you something a little special for it).

Apparently the main quest can be completed in record time, apparently when the game was first released they had the developers racing to see who could beat it first and it was really short if you knew exactly what you were doing and cut every corner possible.

one more question. one of the DLC rises the level cap to 30 as I have heard, but will it rise the level cap in the core game or do I have to wait until I visit the DLC part and then my level cap rises.

All said and done, counting all the sidequests, all the locations, hiting the level cap, the story quest, and the Broken steel DLC, I clocked at just over...

200 hours.

...Wow. That must've been a really good game.

The main quest is reletively short if you are just playing to play it. If you are playing to get a certain karma or result then it could take days.

Without getting distracted at all by side quests, I could probably get the main story and all DLC stories done in a couple of days max.
As long as you're immersed and having fun, it shouldn't matter how long it takes you to complete it.

First i played it almost straight trough, about 15 hours, focusing on the main quest. Now I've played my second game about 50 hours and made no progress in the main story ^^

Honestly it only lasted me about 100 odd hours, doing every single bit of DLC and quest. I also did the main campaign with bad karma too but I play games very quickly

If you focus purely on the main story it is very short, but if you go out and explore, it can last for months. The DLCs don't really last very long though, they can be done in about 2 hours (maybe 3 for PL).
