However I did switch over and after getting used to it I really couldn't go back. It's a little bit elitist, but I get really picky when games try to institute crap like 'Mouse Smoothing' or 'Reduce Mouse Lag'.
I'm like this a lot, it mostly happend with ports and the mouse becomes really slow and unresponsive, and for someone that usually has the sensitive of their mouse set to 10 on 1800dpi (relatively low compared to other mouses, but still really fast) to have this Mouse smoothing and stuff drives me nuts.

If you really and i do stress really want to use a conrtoller, you can just use a 360 controller. It has a USB connector (the wired ones) that can plug in to your PC. It works with any steam games that say they are compatible. Most of the games are.

Note: many PC gamers, including myself, will gladly let you know that you will be at an aiming disadvantage with a controller. Console games include autoaim, and pc games do not. You get way more precision with a mouse, but that's just my recommendation. If you're into platformers, I'd recommend picking up a controller anyway.
Console games with auto aim include auto aim. Console games without auto aim do not have auto aim.

I tried to play it with a 360 controller before just for kicks and giggles. I got destroyed and I think I'm fairly good with a controller.

Very true, I'm sorry if I was unclear. Read up a little bit and you will find that most popular shooters for consoles contain some sort of aiming compensation to account for the "accuracy deficiency" with a controller.

I like my 360 gamepad for shooters because I have all my controls at my fingertips and I have beaten the crap out of many a elitest pc players who spammed me with Key/Mouse FTW

Play with whatever is comfortable, but I think the Xbox 360 Controller is compatible with most games when you plug it in. I don't know if you need a special one or just a USB cable to plug it in, I think just the USB cable.

I however play with a mouse and keyboard when on the PC. When on the console... well, I'm pretty much screwed, aren't I?
