I still think there's a lot of good JRPGs but a lot of them on handhelds, Radiant Historia, don't know whether it is going to be released anywhere but Japan but it sounds good, its influenced mostly by Chrono Trigger and the time travel aspect of that game. I think if you look hard enough you can still find brilliant old-school JRPGs, and hopefully Square will do a remake of Final Fantasy VI on DS or PSP (PLEASE).
FYI, Radiant Historia is going to be released in NA in late February.
I'm in Europe, don't think they've said whether it will come out here but seeing it is coming out in NA surely it will for EU but I just need confirmation of it.

I dunno, we never got the first one on PS2 despite it being released in NA. Well, I say first, but I don't think it's a direct continuation, however a lot of people who worked on Radiata Stories were working on it. But eitherway it's also being published by ATLUS. ATLUS don't have a european section.

I'm not sure about this but I will say that there are 2 or 3 series that I absolutely LOVED and they got worse and worse with each installment: Suikoden and Wild Arms, and to a lesser extent FF.

It just seems they took everything I loved about the originals and gutted it. I kind of see a pattern now between Suikoden and FF. By the time Suikoden 4 rolled around, I played it and beat it only because it was Suikoden. But I really did not like the game, they took everything that people loved about the original game and removed it and replaced it with pretty graphics and a generic storyline. It was so boring. Same with FFXIII (only I couldn't bring myself to beat it). Wild Arms I couldn't stand to play after Wild Arms 3 so I can't comment on that series. But honestly, Suikoden 1 is one of my favorite JRPG's of all time.

I think they became more story and graphics focused than actual gameplay. Square Enix (as a developer not a publisher) in particular seems to be so stubborn on simple things that people want (years of frustration in dealing with them over FFXI and FFXIV) and then when they actually implement the things people want they go overboard with it. But I guess that's a different argument, just goes to the point that they get pretty stubborn to adopt to new ways of thinking.
Did you play Suikoden V? I thought that was pretty good...

Yeah, but someone usually fills the role of publishing their games over here. Atlus have become a whole lot popular since the SMT/Persona games, so I think someone's going to publish here as long as it does well in the US.

And if they don't, the DS is region-free as far as I'm aware, so you can always import.

Not always though. I know we didn't get Devil Survivor from them. But yeah, I generally import from america if it doesn't come out here. Won't be quite as easy with the 3DS though, sigh.

I like...
1. Cutscenes
2. Turn Based Combat
3. Romance in the stories
4. The likeable characters that are unfortunately lacking in modern JRPGs (Final Fantasy XIII, I'm looking at you)
5. The emotions they make me feel for the characters and story in general.
6. Their art style
6. Whatever else they're known for that I like.

I don't want JRPGs to change. They've been fine all along until now because they're trying to change. All I wish is that they had bigger budgets so that every JRPG could be as high quality as something like Final Fantasy in the way they do their graphics. This doesn't mean they have to lose their anime style graphics or anything.
So you do want them to change, you want them to change back to being good.
True, True. You got me there.
