Hey everybody! It's that time again when I can't help but realize I haven't grabbed a new game in a few weeks and I'm almost ready to commit to a purchase. Being me though, I'm looking at older games since I miss out on a lot. Anyway this brings me to Sonic. I'm really behind when it comes to Sonic in general and looking at one of three titles...well four but I'm leaning towards three...

Sonic Colors, Sonic Generations (PS3) and, Sonic Unleashed (same as before, PS3)

I'm also curious about Lost Worlds but am looking at those other three due to how inexpensive they are. Basically, I know this about those games: Colors is supposedly the best Wii exclusive and I don't even need to touch it to know it's (probably) better than Secret Rings or, Black Knight. Generations is also held in high regard but I don't know about and PS3 specific bugs. As for Unleashed, I know that this is the bad one in my list of three...well, it's half bad as I'm given to understand the Sonic levels are actually really well done.

Basically what I'm looking for here is, what do you guys think about each of those three games? Which would you chose if you had to chose one? Am I mistaken in assuming Colors is the best of the bunch? Is the PS2 or Wii version of Unleashed better than the PS3 version? Is the 3DS version of Generations the better version? Should I reconsider Lost Worlds now that it's been patched?

To add in a slight twist, I should probably explain that the last Sonic game I played to completion was Sonic The Hedgehog 06. Since then I tried the original but couldn't beat it and wasn't mad enough to go back (yet anyway). Nothing against the Genesis titles of course I just lost interest and went on to a different game.

Thanks if you made it this far and thanks again if you have any advice for me one way or another!

I'd go with Sonic Colors. Sonic Unleashed isn't a horrible game by any means, it's just that the great sections were only a few minutes long, while the average sections (yes, I thought the Werehog sections were okay, and a little enjoyable) were way too long. Sonic Generations is also good, but it has a weird difficulty curve at some points, and the final boss is horrific. Actually, most of the bosses weren't the good. I don't know, I just enjoyed Colors the most, but you should also check out Generations.

Well, I've only really played Generations, but I'd still go with that simply because of the 2D levels. The 3D ones aren't really anything special, but I'd probably say that about Unleashed and Colors as well. I'm just not a big fan of 3D Sonic, even after many of the improvements it underwent in Unleashed. They are reasonably enjoyable now, but nothing I'd personally buy. If you do like some past 3D Sonic games like the Adventure titles, then you'll probably enjoy the 3D levels a lot, but I can only say that based on what I hear from those who do prefer the (good) 3D Sonic games over the 2D ones.

Generations is one of my all-time favourite Sonic games, if not my favourite. It's absolutely fantastic and it can be had for dirt cheap these days. I've played the PS3 version and I didn't notice any bugs, it's just as good as the 360 version.

I haven't played Sonic Colors as I don't own a Wii, but it's high on my agenda when I get around to buying a Wii U. Colors is highly regarded.

Sonic Unleashed: The PS3 version has slowdown issues in some places that the 360 version doesn't, but most of them are in hub worlds rather than actual gameplay. It also has a bit of a learning curve, since it's the fastest of the three, so you have to learn how to take the stages at high speed rather than just holding down Square. As for the night stages, they're not terrible by any means, but they do tend to drag on a bit.

Sonic Colours: It's short, but that's not really a bad thing, since it's also pretty replayable. Finding all the Red Rings in each stage can require some degree of ingenuity, and a full run of the game in a single sitting like a classic Sonic title is entirely possible with a score-attack mode neither of the other games have. Also, Eggman gets to be the final boss, no eldritch abomination strings attached, so that's great too.

Sonic Generations: Somewhat reversing the cast cull that Unleashed and Colours enacted can make this game's story the weakest of the three, especially if you don't know anyone involved (such as the Chaotix). The levels are probably the best of the lot, however, taking Colours' more forgiving design and extending them to closer to Unleashed's length.

Overall: Sonic Colours is probably my favourite out of all of those, but Generations is definitely worth playing, and Unleashed isn't anywhere near as bad as it's made out to be. Play them all in whatever order you feel like, and have a blast (processing.)

Generations is definitely the best of the three, particularly if you're a long-time Sonic fan, but I'd say that they are all worth picking up if possible.

I really enjoyed Sonic Unleashed, some of the levels were weird but most of them were fun to play.
Like you said, the Night/Werehog levels are a little weird and abruptly different from the standard Sonic levels, but I ended up liking the variety.
The final level, which alternates back and forth between Day and Night Sonic, is so intense. I was literally on the edge of my seat-- yelling at the screen at each death-- and it took several hours until I finally learned all the locations of the secret lives and the hidden shortcuts, and was able to beat the game. It felt great.

I played Sonic Generations pretty soon after, and I like to think of it as a better game simply because they replaced the Werehog levels with 2D Sonic Levels. It may be the nostalgia, but being able to play original Sonic 2D levels followed by re-imagined 3D ones is really fun!

You can't really go wrong with Sonic, and since you named 3 solid titles I have the feeling that you'll be enjoying whichever game you pick.
