I barely consider Nolan or Snyder to be competent directors; any attempts at straying outside of their little bubbles results in disastrously bungled attempts at epic film-making. Neither of them should be digesting the kind of grandiose movies that they've ended up pooping out in the past few years -- The Dark Knight series was a misstep that took itself and its mythology way too seriously, and Snyder has proven time and time again that he is incapable of crafting anything more than soulless eye-porn when he's handed a big budget. Neither of them can write compelling dialogue or characters and they both seem satisfied with letting actors put the least amount of effort possible into their roles.
Nolan is at his best when he's directing smaller, focused projects like Memento and Insomnia. Snyder isn't capable of handling bigger budgets without going completely overboard in almost every aspect -- the man doesn't seem to have any impulse control. They just don't understand what the benefits of subtlety and discretion are anymore.
