Gasp! A company trying to extend the lifespan of an multiplayer game!

1. How is it Valve's fault for players continuing to enjoy one of their games? It's not, and to imply so is ridiculous.

2. That's what companies do. They attempt to advertise their product to you and entice you to buy it.

And Valve has already "inscribed their name into greatness", by making a ton of amazingly fun and popular games. Y'know, as opposed to milking TF2 dry before moving on. I can't say that for a lot of companies.

What is the point of this thread, exactly? To complain that Valve games are popular? To complain that Valve wants you to play Valve games? Or do you want Valve to ban Valve games from Steam? None of that makes any sense.
You can't be anymore right than this guy.

So what? its not like people only buy a 50-60 dollar game JUST for that hat, they go to the Valve store to get the hat for like 5 bucks or whatever. Its called micro-transactions and has proved to be an extremely lucrative way of making money. Its how valve are making money instead of releasing games every 5 minutes...

Valve Too my knowledge Valve have released a new IP every....I'd say 3-5 Years (Half Life, Tf2, Portal, L4D) all between 1998-2008 so thats 4 new IP's within 10 years, id say that is pretty darn good. and for them to be quite popular and well known within the gaming community.

How did valve make all of it's money? Feeding off of the same games for years now. Counter Strike Source is still the #1 game played on steam (An extreamly sad fact). But I can understand this, and I forgive them for this, because if it is not broken, don't fix it. But are steam players seriously so closed minded that this is the main game they play? Why don't they go explore new titles? If you ask me, It is pointless to have all of these other games on steam if your market is based around a crap old game.
So you're saying that people should stop playing a game they enjoy! *gasp*

The market isn't based around a "crap old game" (seriously, why would people keeping playing it after so many years if it was a "crap old game") I havent seen CS:S advertised on Steam in a VERY long time, its constantly advertising advertising other games. So saying its market is based around a "crap old game" doesnt really make sense...

Remember all the rage that came when left 4 dead 2 was announced.
It was basiclly because it was done TOO EARLY. People expect that valve updates their games for a LONG time and if there is a slight hint they wont do that then its rage and boycott all around.

So basiclly Most fans dont want new games(except for ep3)they want a a stable and fun game to play for a long time. Its basiclly their marketing strategy. People will buy valve's games because they know it will amuse for a long time. Instead of for a few moths or so(md2 i am looking at you)

PS: I dont know jack about marketing so i'm proberbly wrong but this is what i think.
Please correct me where i'm wrong.

What can we say about valve? They are a great company. They made such an open engine to create a community, an Easy to use SDK for game makers to get their start. They made great games like Half Life, Counter Strike: Source, and Team Fortress 2...
But they have seemed to peak...

Lets look at what they did to make themselves disliked currently in my eyes.

Alright, so to start this, we have to look back back. Back to the realease of Counterstike and Team Fortress. Both games helped valve carve their name into the gaming market. Fast forward to now.

But however, valve does have its ways to try to tempt gamers into buying these games.

So goes to the 2nd reason I dislike valve.
Team Fortress 2
How can I hate such a great game? I don't. It's the market based around the game. What happens whenever most steam games come out? I get an update where if I prebuy a game, I get a hat in TF2. Valve's entire market is based around it. And valve has grown calm to this idea, keep the game, people like it, we still make money, we get rich. This is a cheap, heartless way to kick a gamer in the balls. Valve, Your money can't come souly from hats! For chrissakes come up with new ideas! I don't need a virtual hat for forking out 60 bucks on a new game! I NEED THE GAME! I admit, I play Team fortress 2 a lot. I play counterstrike a lot. But come the realease of Crysis 2, I wont. I'll have a game to play. And I'm not buying it on steam. Hell, I'm probably buying it on Xbox.

But I want to help valve.

This is my point, COME OUT WITH NEW IDEAS. Sure, portal 2 will probably be a good game, but not great. A few new things, but nothing outstanding. Valve, eventually people will move one from these games, what happens when your current generation grows up? Doing the same things over and over again will not attract new people, you're stuck with what you have, and fanbois are like Oil, they don't last forever. Valve, come up with new Ideas. A new game series, But make it more innovative and open to other gamers! Don't restrict yourself to the same damn thing, open up!

Yes, I'm making my game through the source engine, but this is to test out how I like making games. I am trying not to limit myself, but I will probably have to.

So valve, if you want to be arround for a long time, and inscribe your name in greatness, Think outside of the orange box. You can do it. You've done it before. I'd absolutly hate for you to be remembered as a way to pass time.

I know that steam was made mainly for valve games, but look at all of it's potential. They made one of the most powerful gaming tools in the universe, and they let gamers sink into their valve based comfort zone.

Thank you for reading, and post what you think of valve.
(I really hope valve reads this, though they probably will not)

Edit:
Okay, yes valve has created some cool ideas in the past, but none of them have reached the mainstream sucess of other titles. To this point, Valve has a sliver of the online game market, While other companies have a booming percent. It is like valve is becoming an exclusive cult, and their market is dying out because of this. You may think the games are popular, but look at the numbers, and compair those to other games. (Not the steam versions)

Now that people are begining to bring age into the topic, Let's concider something.
If halo 2 were still active, it would probably have 50,000 players. I sure as hell know I would play it. And bungi was able to make 2 more mainstream success games, barley breaking a sweat. Valve has a lot of compitition, and it is taking over the market. I just want them to stay arround, y'know? I like TF2, but I get bored of it. I love half life, but Playing the same campaign over and over gets boring.
I am disgusted that you missed that obvious pun.

OT: I am highly inclined to agree on the TF2 points but not so much on the CS points. If the game is really good enough to be top game on steam even if they did release a new one people would probably still play it.

Odd. Valve does deserve a thrashing, but for none of the points you brought up. Having to purchase keys to unlock in game items for instance.

And you compare them to Bungie? o_O The company responsible for.. Marathon, then the FPS based in Marathon called Halo. Then Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo Reach, Halo ODST, Halo this, Halo that.. They're doing the same thing as Valve. Even worse is that they killed realism FPS's. Not that I like Gears of War either. :p But I liked Counter Strike, then go into Halo and you can't die. Halo was so successful that every other FPS since then has mimicked them. CoD for example. At least in Halo you have to pick up health packs. In CoD you just don't get hit by a bullet for a few seconds then you're back to full hp. Wait.. Getting sidetracked onto a rant about bad games.

Episodic gaming, releasing shorter games more often. So breaking Half Life 2 into several parts releasing one part a year. 2004 is the release date of HL2. Episode 3 still isn't out.

They're not busy, they are lazy, but they're as lazy as Bungie. Fortunately they aren't as retarded as Bungie. Bungie being the company that sent a cease and desist to a modder who built a mod for C&C Generals within the Marathon Universe because Bungie was going to be creating a game like that years later. They didn't make the game, we still don't have the mod.

Yes Valve suck, not for reasons you mentioned.

actually the most played game on Steam is STILL Counter-Strike 1.6 and very close is Counter-Strike: Source, CoD: Mw2 and Blops. and in the top 10 there is also Team Fortress 2 and L4d 2. if you're going to rant at least click on the graph on the steam page.

ok so, concerning what you said, I don't really get your point, Valve isn't basing his TF2 sales on hats, he's got hats, and weapon packs and really cool stuff that gets you hooked to the game and maintains it fresh and interesting.

Really I'm thinking this is more of a rant on the whole gaming industry. Name a title from a major developer which came out recently and doesn't have a number on the end. Homefront. ok cool, now name one with an original concept. Yea.
Alright now try it with an indie developer. (minecraft doesn't count, clearly brilliant and in defiance of the stagnation of the games industry) Rules: no 2d sidescroller or galaga clone. Damn, got me again.
LBP is pretty original, enslaved is pretty original, bulletstorm is pretty original
Its easy to say developers should use more original concepts but can you come up with one that would work as a game? would it sell?

They aren't popular. They have about 50000 people playing counter strike right now. That is sad. Halo 3 probably has that. Get on Halo Reach, 900,000 people maybe? Valve is closing itself in. I don't care if people like old games, but their is a time to move on. And that time is now for me, either valve makes new games with new concepts, or I will stop buying and playing games made by them.
On TOPIC: Valve still have one of the best shooters on the market its only fair they keep it going, their at least kind enough to keep adding new content and are not releasing another game with a +1 on the box each patch. Halo reach has 900,000 players yer sure but that is much more new the counter strike so whats your point?
Valve are one of the only big devs that do push something new out such alien swarm, DOTA 2, TF2, Portal 2. Each game release they change enough to make it actually classed as a sequel rather then just another 2.0 game like your CODs, Halos and Kill zones that just fall each time they release into that big old black hole of bad games design that Modern warfare has created.
OF TOPIC: That sounds like a mix of flame bait and pure hate towards valve but hey whatever its your opinion.

I've ranted a fair bit about Valve myself, they certainly aren't perfect but your argument seems to be that they should kill off a game with a huge user base and that giving away free gimmick items for TF2 is somehow unethical? I don't think you understand how business works.

So, you want Valve to make a bland, unoriginal knockoff of a game that they milk dry over the next ten years?

The whole reason everyone loves Valve is because they don't do that. They create fun games, original ideas, and by all appearances have a soul, unlike just about every other company in the gaming industry.

I salute Valve. I salute them with all the pride and joy in my heart. And I ask you all to salute with me.
