A rational discussion about the advantages and disadvantages of the ps3 and xbox 360

Pros and Cons time:

PS3:
Pros:
Blu-Ray has more space,
PSN is free,
Great Exclusives,
You can go on the internet.

Cons:
Bru-Ray takes longer to load (due to to blue laser instead of a red one),
Framerate issues on cross platform games.
I have a PC (internet)

X360:
Pros:
Xbox Live (more support than PSN),
DVD loads faster,
Exclusive Awsomeness(see wut i did thar?),
More demos, videos etc.

Cons:
Less space on DVD (more layers = more space = longer loads),
Xbox Live not free (I think it's worth it but my friends don't)
Racists/Bigots.

Exculives will ALWAYS look better because they are better optimised for the console. (That said, some of the PS3 stuff is scarily realistic). Does anyone else miss the times when consoles only played games?

A short summation of console wars,

Exclusive titles sell consoles, console makers want consoles to sell, console developers fight for exclusives.

Consumers often cannot afford both systems, consumers want both systems, consumers want both exclusives. Consoles will not provide universal games because they need to sell their consoles, consumers get pissed off, consumers take out their anger by shouting at the opposing console and its fans.

It is an endless and vicious cycle that has occured throughout gaming.

Playstation 2 vs. X-Box
360 vs. PS3

All the same really

Personally I own all consoles (360, PS3, Wii) and CURRENTLY I get more mileage out of my 360, but I bought the PS3 because of the kind of games I like and their likelyhood to appear on the PS3. I judge my preferences more on some of the little known titles and less on the big releases because those make more of a difference for me. For example, all hardware issues aside, I like games like the Shin Megami Tensei series, The Nippon Ichi SRPG's, quirkly japanese titles and the games designed by Level 5. These are all unlikely to come out on the 360. Also games like Folklore, odd JRPG's with little broad market appeal, do not get put on the 360. On the otherhand, Mistwalker and Bioware present a strong case for the 360, both producing quality products but both count in that big release category. So far though the PS3 has not delivered for me but I am hoping that more Folklore esque titles and smaller JRPG releases make it at least a worthwhile purchase. I do also love my high profile 360 releases, but I don't know if I would, in the end, trade them for my smaller, quirky games. Mostly however, I am glad I own both and am allowed to make impartial decisions.

and I know these other feelings are true because before I got a good job and could afford both this is how I felt.

I agree with the missing the time when consoles only played games.. screw everything else i buy a console to play a game, nothing else.

My whole thing is what games looked better to me as in fun not graphics and that lead me to the Xbox 360 MGS4,R&C,Motorstorm,etc. doesn't look fun to me but Halo 3,GTA 4 episodic content, Spore, and Forza motorsport, etc. does and the fact that many of the PS3's games are also on 360 I honestly didn't see much use in buying a console that has all of the multi-platform games I like but none of the exclusives.

The wii has innovation, but is still a bit rusty,
And the PS3 is a rip.
You know why?
Blu Ray.
Lemme tell you what that means.
No backwards compatability (WAAA!!! I still can't play my old PS1 games!)
Not much difference in resolution.
Expensive as hell.
No variety for games, although you can now buy Portal for it, but why bother?
And finally *drum roll*...

Sony has tried this before, in the time of the VHS. Everyone will forget Blu-ray buy 2009, I assure you. I can't remember what the name of the tape they used was, but I do know that it was made exclusive. And exclusive means "only made by Sony." And that means no competition. And THAT means that prices will never drop.
All in all, Sony are repeating one of their worst mistakes ever, and they are digging their own grave.

Hoo boy, time to correct some misconceptions and question about others:

Backwards compatibility: PS1 games are wholly supported, if anything, you should be worried about not playing PS2 games. Blu-Ray has nothing to do with this.
Difference b/w resolution: To each his own. Some people (including myself) see a pretty sizable difference in quality, video and audio, compared to DVD. And IMO, it shows in the best releases from Disney and some other companies.
Expensive: Really not that much more than the 360. BTW, what's the price of your PC?
No variety for games: Honestly, this is a given for ANY console in its first year, even the 360 suffered from this. But seeing the current crop of PS3 games out now and in the future, I'd say the games are already pretty varied.

Finally, yes, Sony has tried this before against VHS with the Betamax (the name of the tape in question). And yes, I know that they failed with that in the past. But I think Blu-Ray's situation is far better than Betamax's ever was, because for one, Sony are not the only Blu-Ray producers in the market, and for another, the studio backing trumps that of Betamax (AFAIK).

All in all, I neither think Blu-Ray will overtake DVD anytime soon, nor do I think Sony are making the same mistakes as before, at least, not at the moment.
