Hello Escapists. I come here with a simple question that I know someone of the knowledgeable escapist gaming community will know the answer to. I tried to Google this but failed to find an answer.

I have my own gamer tag for Xbox live that recently upgraded to gold subscription again after a long hiatus. I also bought all the DLC for Halo 3 as I had the itch to play some online.

My girlfriend has her own gamer tag which is only a silver subscription. She also has the urge to play Halo 3, with the DLC. She has NOT bought the DLC for her gamertag.

If I did upgrade her to gold, didn't buy the DLC on her profile, and she played on my console (we only have 1 anyway) which has the DLC on it, will she be able to play the DLC on her gamertag? With or without me? I know she can as a guest Xbox live profile but I want her to have a proper name etc.

I hope I have explained the situation and question sufficiently, and I fear I know the answer is no, but if anyone knows conclusively I would appreciate an answer.

Thanks!

False.

Any profile on that console can access any and all DLC purchased on that console.

For instance, I originally bought the Heroic map pack for Halo 3, my wife has bought the Legendary pack and Mythic pack. We can both use all maps, whether we play together or not.
I can also use all the Fallout 3 DLC which was purchased on my wife's account and we can play each others XBLA downloads.

Of course if I retrieved my gamertag to another console that the content wasn't purchased on (therefore unlicensed) I would only be able to use the Heroic map pack, which I paid for (which is free now anyway, but still).

No, No, I have tried this, I borrowed a friends profile download the DLC, and then tried to access it through my account. It doesn't work, I think theres is sort of code that prevent the download from working on all accounts throughout the system.

Because the content was licensed to your friends console/account when he bought it originally, because he bought it on his own console. You would be able to use it on his profile, but not your own.
Since the OP here wants to use DLC he bought for his own XBox, and his girlfriend will be using the same XBox, he'll be fine. I've even made a new account on my 360 and it can use all my DLC just fine.
