There's a question that I get asked a lot in Skyrim (because I keep restarting).
Why the fuck was I in that ambush?

My character is a Khajiit, who was the guard and alchemist for one of the caravans. He went into the forest to pick up a few herbs, and was attacked by bandits. The caravan was slaughtered by the raiding party just before this. The bandits left him for dead, but he survived because he was picking some blisterwort and blue mountain flowers (both of those make a Restore Health potion). He ate them raw and managed to stagger off. He wandered into a clearing and was arrested. The Rorikstead horse thief was also arrested trying to bundle the Dohvahkiin onto the stolen horse.

So basically, why was your character in the wrong place at the wrong time?

My character was just chasing down a rabbit when she saw some people. She went up to them, went into third person mode and starting strafing around them. She then went into a conversation with some guy called Ulfric, got bored and starting jumping about in front of there faces. The imperials came along, saw the caravan and thought my character was some sort of jester so they captured everyone.

Well if it was me playing during that scene, that would of been pretty much exactly how I would of been captured.

my character is a female mage type with a dalliance in swords. while out practicing lighting deer on fire, she saw a pool of water stripped off all her gear jumped in and swam to the other side where a bunch of soldiers kidnapped her and brought her to their camp. their she met this horribly dressed fellow named Ulfric who gave her some ratty clothes. shortly after she was captured in the raid on the Stormcloak encampment by the imperial legion.

Oh...I get it. It took me a second. I was about to ask, "Wait, where did it tell you this?"

Hm...My Nord was looking for gold. She was saving up to buy a house in Solitude. Saw the Stormcloaks were harassing some poor Khajiit who looked like she was about to fall over, so I rushed over to help ;-). Bad timing, as the Imperials raided the camp just and mistook me for a bandit.

My wood elf was going to assassinate Ulfric he was close but hearing his impassioned speech about Skyrim for the people of Skyrim stayed his hand just at that point the Empire struck and he was swept up in ensuing melee, Ulfric never knew where the arrow that took out that Thalmore came from but it saved his life.

My Nord woke up on a prison wagon, accused of a crime he can't remember. Then, as he is about to get executed, a fucking dragon shows up and destroys the town. Then, after that, he gets attacked by guards when he tries to escape!

Horrible day,

Let's see... My nord (Zubaz) was one day walking through StormCloak territory (Because he's Zubaz, he doesn't give a damn) When he saw a little boy crying on the road. He asked the little boy what was wrong and the little boy said that he had fallen and scraped his knee. Zubaz then used his healing magic to heal the boy. Ironically, an imperial scout force came by and arrested him because they thought he was a pedophile. He was taken to a camp and that's when he met Ulfric. Zubaz didn't know Ulfric's status (Zubaz cares not for your royalties and ranks!) and playfully mocked him. Only when they neared their destination did Zubaz know of Ulfric's status and thought "When we get to Sovengarde, I hope i don't see him again!". Then the dragon attacked. Zubaz followed the Imperial guy because he didn't trust Ulfric (Because Zubaz hates the color blue). Long read, huh?

My redguard, Cerith, was trying to jump the border from hammerfell after a botched bandit raid upon a major cache of rare desert gems being held within a city. She was working as a mercenary for the bandit clan organizing the raid, but things went south quickly. She and several others were held captive and identified.

Before trial, she was able to escape, steal a mount and hopped the border into skyrim. Not use to the arctic climate, tired, and hungry she stopped at the first settlement she could find on her way to Falkreath. Unfortunately, this was the stormcloak encampment that would be raided later that night.

My Argonian was a deserter from the Argonian occupation forces in Morrowind and a former assassin for the Dark Brotherhood. After seeing the atrocities that the Black Marsh army was committing, he fled and was the on run in Skyrim trying to survive when he was caught in the same ambush that Ulfric and the Stormcloaks were caught when he was trying to steal their food.

My Dunmer, Chad Sexington, was drinking with his buddies. Now, Chad and his buddies were well known for drinking like no mortal beings had ever drunk before and after a series of events he couldn't remember he found himself on a prison cart with the leader of a rebellion in SKYRIM. Just as his hungover mind began trying to piece together how he got arrested (It certainly hadn't been the first time) and how he wound up in a different country (again, not the first time) he realized he was being taken to be executed. Then, of all the things to happen when you're hungover, a fucking dragon appears.

My high elf, Vaelis, didn't want anything to do with the Thalmor and deserted his people. He's been traveling Tamriel for a few years, running from his former comrades. He even gave up magic along the way so he wouldn't draw too much attention to himself. As he passed into Skyrim, he bumped into the middle of an Imperial ambush and was captured with the Stormcloaks and the horse thief. When the imperial said he wasn't on the list, he was surprised. He then started thinking that maybe he could start a new life in Skyrim. He decided not to take up magic again however, as he grew too accustomed to his greatsword and heavy armor.

My character...lesse, Imperial Spell-Thief. Growing up as the son of a wealthy noble, while also being an apprentice mage of adequate skill is a lifestyle that almost everyone could possibly want. But not for him.

It was too boring, too...official, and everything that he did was just...dry. So, one night when he was sleeping, a thief just happened to sneak into his room, and ended up caught by the young noble. Instead of turning him in, he charged the thief with lessons in espionage and stealth.

Of course, the thief made out quite rich from siphoned funds from his father's account. But, naturally, he got caught somewhere along the way, and was instead sent off by his father to 'become a man' via going to Skyrim on a trade mission. One that went terribly sour when the Stormcloaks attacked, and were all unceremoniously captured by the Imperials, along with our intrepid Spell-Thief.

Naturally when you kill a chicken some hundred yards outside the town it will make the pitchfork mob come after you and they will never forgive your heinous act of chicken homicide. Note the guards of the town couldn't care less and will even dispose of the mob for you.

Skyrim justice system at its finest.

My character (a Dark Elf rouge with a fancy for magic) actually commited a petty crime so as to be arrested and than was waiting for the right moment to break out and kill everyone... because he could. Course than "you know what" happened...
