Nope, but an anime character from all games every face off?

YES PLEASE.

think of a game you like, any game with cartoony characters, put em all into a SSB (one char per franchise) and its time to throw down!

There is something close to that...granted it is jump only, but I doubt rival companies would contribute characters.

There is "Rag doll Kung-Fu fists of plastic" Which is probably the closest thing ever to a SSMB game the PS will ever get. Actaully its pretty much an exact ripoff except rag doll physics kung fu action figures. and fish throwing.

I don't like Smash Bros. type of games.
And I don't see why you would want Sony to whore out their IPs as bad as Nintendo does.
I mean, they already made PlayStation Move Heroes, wasn't that annoying enough?

I suppose it IS possible, they have have a good enough line-up:
Kratos, Nathan Drake, Ratchet, Clank, Jak, Daxter, Sackboy, Sly Cooper, Cole MacGrath, Nathan Hale, Sweet Tooth, Rico, Sir Daniel Fortesque, the Patapon guys, the LocoRoco blob, anything from Team ICO's creations, ...

But no, I wouldn't be interested. (Besides, it would be pretty problematic: Nintendo is notorious for keeping 95% of all its franchises PG, while Sony has a player in every degree - to gore or not to gore?)

I think the problem with the Sony characters is that most of them are now sold on other consoles, and not PS exclusive anymore. We're talking Crash Bandicoot, Final Fantasy, Spyro?

Smash Bros prides itself on it's cartoony-ness. I don't think it would really work.
And Final Fantasy isn't a Sony franchise.
It also helps when you have a long history of characters people actually care about. I know not every Nintendo character in the Smash Bros series are iconic and beloved, but a good chunk of them are.

Since Sony doesn't have many well-known and well-loved characters of their own, the list drops off pretty fast. The Playstation Platforms have always had excellent third party support, but that's not the same as loveable icons. Or even known icons. I'm not sure Crash Bandicoot would move games.
