4Chan made me resilient to shocking images.

Games have only done me good.

Unless games show real life imagery within the gameplay or a cutscene, I would have to say no.

I stil recoil in horror over how disgusting this world can be, and be saddened when I think about why things like that happen.

No. Things are much much different in real life. You may think you are prepared for it, but in reality nothing can desensitize you to the real thing aside from exposure to it.

Games are nowhere near as horrible as real life. So no, it won't.

Heck, I think it can even make it worse. Especially for the people who think they are prepared and desensitised. Then they see someone get horribly mutilated in an accident, or even worse.

They think they know what to expect, and then WAM, they get the real deal. That must be even more disturbing than seeing such things without knowing what to expect.

I can't say for sure but I think so, yes. I'm not as sensitive as I used to be but I'm 18 now and have changed a lot over the past 10 years.

I get that effect from the internet in general. It's the only positive side effect of visiting 4chan. Nothing disturbs or sickens me anymore.

Like a Jedi going over to the Dark Side, then turning back and being all the stronger for it.

you wouldn't really know if you are desensitized because you can't and will not be exposed to the equivalent of a videogame in real life. unless you live in warzones or total poverty where killing or be killed the most available options.

and even then... you could say that war and poverty desensitize people that live in them. so, ya.

if videogames do desensitize anybody, it's those that are already not that "up there" mentally.

Yes, but not in the way people would think. I think that, more than anything else, playing games with graphic content allows people to build a kind of awareness that they are playing a game, or dealing with media. I guess, somewhat like we're entering a different mode when playing games or watching TV. We reach a point where we've seen most of this stuff in the media world and there's enough of a disconnect that we know whatever is in the media world and it _stays_ in the media world when we shut things off.

Jump scares aside, the only game that gets to me anymore is Fatal Frame, which I refuse to touch. Silent Hill, Eternal Darkness, not so much.

I hear a noise in my home when I should be alone, start to suspect I'm being followed (Same car following me for a while, especially down rural roads... seriously, I know it's TV, but how do they excuse those tailing someone scenes on TV when there are only two cars on a deserted road for 2 hours and the guy never clues in?) or see someone get hurt? The reaction never changes.

It definitely does, but that doesn't make them any less disturbing.

I think if you gave a gamer a gun and said, "shoot this man" most people wouldn't be able to do it. I know I would never EVER be able to shoot someone, even though I must've shot thousands of people in games over the years.

Not to be redundant, but I think everyone is right. Real violence is totally different than computer imaged violence. I saw someone's leg break in half once on the telly and that freaked me out so bad. I'm still sensitive to violence for sure.

Wasn't there a study that showed that gamers has less nightmares?

So, yes, I would say.
Wow, so that's where all my dreams went....
OT: I guess so. I mean scarry movie don't even remotely scare me anymore, but when I was a kid, even just the front of the box made me wet myself...
Ditto. Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios scared the crap out of me when I was younger. Now I don't even flinch.

No, I've always been a bit difficult to shock. Hell, I'm so indifferent I fake emotions so people don't realise how little I care. And it has nothing to do with video games. Its just who I am.

joking aside i also care little for anything with emotions i find consistancy is not a good thing.

And the other day I hit a squirrel with my car and felt bad as shit.
So no.
Yeah but we like squirrels, people are disposable.
So true. So very true.
