imagine you are playing a multiplayer shooter and you die. what if your player has the ability to go into a parallel realm (sort of like a recording of the game you've just died in). you can go back to the point before you died and kill the person who was about to kill you and then go back into your normal self again. of course in the main realm the person who killed you doesnt know that you killed them because you killed them in the alternate realm. just thought it was an interesting idea and the winner has the most kills on each realm

i dont know if ive explained this very well so feel free to ask questions

Sounds like an interesting idea, almost like Braid in a way. But there would have to be things going on in the parallel dimension too, or have there be some sort of penalty, because otherwise there would be no reason for the player to try and not die.

But I don't see this working in multiplayer, only single player. Because multiplayer is in real time, and you're basically talking about the player who got killed time-travelling back to the point before they were killed, and that just wouldn't work in real time multiplayer. Plus it wouldn't be very fair for the person who killed them. They wouldn't be able to defend themselves, and it would severely imbalance the game. And then if they get killed they might try and go back and kill the other person...and it would just get ridiculous.

Also, I know this sounds nitpicky, but even on Internet forums people take you and your ideas a LOT more seriously when you capitalize and punctuate your sentences properly.

What would be controlling the parallel character? Obviously can't be the same player so would it be an AI that could defend itself or just a recording making it a free and easy kill?

Parallel dimensions are interesting, but the way you've explained it sounds like every time you die you get a free kill.

Not sure it'd work very well. If it's vs AI, you'd probably win, so every death gets you a free kill.
TBH I'm not sure it would really help the game.

Well then the AI would haveto take over the other player which makes it not exciting, so I propose you are sent to do a mission instead, preferably there would be a variety of interesting ones (boss battle, kill well guarded VIP, clear building of snipers, make your way through the battlefield to plant charges on artillery, grenade tricky targets, ...)
And until you can do the mission you can't return, but it also offers the opportunity to get better at it and be back quicker (instead of looking at a countdown) and depending on your performance you could be given extra ammo or equipment when you respawn.

I think I kind of get it. Rather than existing in a state of life or death, the players exist in either reality A or B, and switch between the two when what we usually perceive as a "death" occurs. Please tell me, am I close? I'm still a little confused.

Anyway, it sounds interesting, but possibly a little tough to implement as a multiplayer mechanic.

Would that game just consist of one real death, then a never ending process of parallel realm jumping from the two players as they each take it in turn to jump to a parallel realm and prevent their previous death?

What would be the point of that and how could it work if each player has this ability?

Maybe I'm not imagining this properly, but a FPS reduced to a turn based game, replaying one single instance over and over again, doesn't sound like much fun to me.

I think I get what you are saying, it just seems that this concept works best in singleplayer. For instance:

1. Die
2. Become corporal and travel 10-20 Seconds into the past.
3. Kill guy that killed you before he kills you again.
a. Success: Resulting paradox brings you back to life and the enemies down one solder.
b. Failure: You can't save yourself and you stay trapped in "corporal" form forever.

To add onto this idea however I would say that your "spirit" should inhabit another ally on your side in the past when you die, and you have to save yourself from dying. (No corporal form)

Kind of reminds me of an FPS I herd a long time ago... gah! I can't even remember the name though.

As others have said, the whole time traveling this wouldn't work in multiplayer.

Lets call your two realms "the land of the living" and "the land of the dead" so when you get shot, obviously you go to the land of the dead, where you're now a spirit and can take revenge on the person who killed you for a chance to get back to "the land of the living".

This though, would have to be a very difficult task and maybe the land of the dead isn't so kind, also I imagine other players who have died are now also in the land of the dead and can kill you to take you out of the game permanently. It would be interesting if the person you're hunting happened to get shot by somebody else and now you're both in the land of the dead.

The benefit to the land of the living is that it would be standard multiplayer fare and you have a chance to return. The land of the dead would need to be a treacherous place to discourage players from willingly going there.

How would it work as a multiplayer game if the person who killed you originally doesn't know about you killing him in the "other universe"? Would the "other universe" just be populated with bots?

What would be the point?
